  The problem is voters insisting that there are only two options and continuing to vote along party lines. There’s only two options because you only vote for the two options, you refuse to build an alternative.

  I went to the ER in the US for an infected gallbladder full of stones, it was so bad I had to be hospitalized for almost a week. I was in the ER waiting room in the fetal position for literally hours after a nurse took my vitals before a doctor saw me, there were a couple other people in the waiting room. I nearly died. Over $20k bill after insurance.

  I’ve also gone to the same ER with relatively mild UTI, I peed blood and fainted from the sight but otherwise didn’t really need the ER. They saw me immediately, and it was very busy.

  Triage is a thing, whether they do it properly is another thing.

  That criteria is weighed at 40% of the ranking.

  Is the ranking rigged? No, it’s published by a Chinese university. I’m saying US universities are gaming it.

  Is doesn’t judge quality of published work, just quantity of published works and number citations. GIGO? It’s hard to tell on a short term.

ARWU has been criticised by the European Commission as well as some EU member states for “favour[ing] Anglo-Saxon higher education institutions”. For instance, ARWU is repeatedly criticised in France, where it triggers an annual controversy, focusing on its ill-adapted character to the French academic system[28][29] and the unreasonable weight given to research often performed decades ago.[30] It is also criticised in France for its use as a motivation for merging universities into larger ones.[31]

  There’s more criticism. Take the ranking with a cup of salt.

  They’re saying the guy thinks you have roommates because you can’t afford rent, not because you need someone to do chores. You make your own bed in his world, but making the bed and other domestic chores are so time consuming that you cannot work enough to make enough money to not have a roommate.

  That is, he thinks if you don’t have chores then you can work more, earn more, afford no roommate.

  It’s super out of touch as you said, but he’s not suggesting roommates do your bed.

  We take our work home because we’re thinking about the problems and how to solve them all the time, some of my best solutions came to me in the shower.

  I have a home lab and I often carry what I learn from my lab to work, I’m not working my job when I’m working on my lab, but there mental overlap is there.

  I can’t imagine I’ll be solving many burger flipping problems in the shower.

  Stocks also already get taxed, just at different moments rather than annually: capital gains when you sell, dividends when paid, corporate income tax on the underlying company, estate tax at death. The argument against an annual wealth-style tax is partly that the system already takes its cut, just not on a recurring basis.

  Yeah, that’s sort of the whole point of the post. If I buy a stock for $1 today and still it for $10 tomorrow, I pay taxes on the gains tomorrow.

  If I buy it for $10 today and sell it for $1 tomorrow, I claim it as a loss.

  If I buy a house for $100k yesterday, I’m paying taxes on $400k property today, and $900k tomorrow. Even if tomorrow I sell it for $200k.

  They’re referring to 32 hour shifts, these are the extremes for certain occupations (nurses are notable example). It’s common to work 12-14 hour daily shifts for months at a time without any days off, though.

  And capitalists would love nothing more than to apply it in the US, they see you as lazy leeches, not as the labor that makes their shitty business work.

  Part of the problem is most teachers don’t have an higher education and a lot don’t even have an education degree. They aren’t taught proper pedagogy, they’re just taught to present materials and monitor standardized tests.

  From their point of view, they’re doing what they’ve been told is heroic work from underappreciated and underpaid public servants, which is true; but they miss the part where the curriculum they’ve been handed down doesn’t serve the students in learning how to think and solve challenging problems in life, instead leading them down a specific specialization route to be a good little office drones.

  We’ve failed teachers as much as students, and there aren’t enough education colleges preparing quality teachers and too many schools hiring unqualified people as teachers.

  Clearly sometimes you have to go to those sites, and when you do, you’re exposing yourself to ads, tracking, and potential malware unnecessarily…

  No longer do you have to sift through multiple results to and give your device ad cancer just to get a simple answer to a question. Google just gives you the answer directly! It’s so great and helpful.

  Except when it’s not, but it never says “I don’t know, check the results manually”, it just makes shit up. The other day I googled “geely pixel 9 wireless connection” because I couldn’t connect my pixel 9 to a geely car wirelessly. Google (the maker of the pixel 9) confidently described how the “Geely Pixel 9 is a device made by Geely…” and went on to give useless instructions.

  This was a inconsequential query. What happens when you look up a serious topic and the sites that maintained that knowledge online no longer find it financially feasible? What happens when you rely on the trained model and that’s the only option? What happens when it hallucinates convincingly? Are you sure it hasn’t fooled you yet?

  Social media created bubbles of ignorance and fake news, AI replacing search intends to eliminate the non-bubbles the rest of us seek and count on. What are you gonna do, drive to the library and read books every time you need to learn something new?
