I think I've found the issue, should be resolved in lotide 0.14.1 (though will still need to wait for those timeouts)

Or maybe it wasn't actually fixed: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/4288

Lemmy 0.19.1's release notes mention "0.19.0 has a critical bug where sending outgoing activities can stop working."
Some affected instances appear to have already updated, but maybe they were on 0.19.0 long enough to have built up a long backoff?

apparently lemmy has a "federation state" api, which does indeed report an issue here:
"federation_state": { "instance_id": 4018, "last_successful_id": 7685292, "last_successful_published_time": "2023-12-17T22:55:23.614365Z", "fail_count": 15, "last_retry": "2023-12-21T17:56:30.112502Z", "next_retry": "2023-12-25T12:57:50.112502Z" }

no idea
I've now enabled debug logging on narwhal.city but I don't see any indication that the latest post there was ever sent to us

(somehow I thought the markdown parser would realize the parenthesis isn't part of the link, but alas...)
- Comment on I Might Leave Lotide. Here's Why. 1 year ago:
following non-groups is something I'd like to have eventually (https://todo.sr.ht/~vpzom/lotide/56) but it will introduce a lot of complexity and there are a lot of more "core" features still missing that would have higher priority to me
- Comment on I Might Leave Lotide. Here's Why. 1 year ago:
understandable, at this point I'm not spending a lot of time on lotide and I don't think other implementations are really testing against it. I haven't even really been using it myself, and my recent attempt to start was just in time to run into an issue with follows to Lemmy instances (sent them a PR, hopefully will be fixed in their next release, but until then I guess we just can't follow new communities...)
That said, I do plan to start dogfooding better, especially given that Reddit seems to be dying now. I hadn't heard of kbin until quite recently so haven't tested that at all, hopefully should be able to get any issues there resolved. Nice to have another player in the space
