- Comment on Bill and Melinda French Gates and Warren Buffett’s Giving Pledge after 15 years: Only 9 of the 256 billionaires actually followed through on giving away half their wealth 4 weeks ago:
Let’s not forget
lobbyingbribery. And since days political influence is ostensibly being bought for the sake of charity, nobody would even blink.Just my theory, mind you. But every one of these charitable foundations is primarily done for tax avoidance. No question. Well that is every one of these foundations except for the one set up by Mr President Tiny Dick. He just can’t resist the temptation of embezzlement. I mean seriously, he bankrupted THREE casinos, and had a judge not just dissolve his foundation, but also bar him from running one of these so-called charitable foundations ever again.
I don’t even want to know how you can fuck up that egregiously. One of those things where you have to wonder if successfully finding understanding of how it happened is going to hopelessly corrupt your own soul for all of eternity.
- Comment on Republican Senator callously says 'biblically, we are supposed to work' to millions set to lose health care 4 weeks ago:
No. Sorry, but the people, events, and even societal structures are all long dead. Therefore, “relevant” is factually incorrect.
Now, I do fully agree that there are plenty of stories in that book that highlight good morals, and healthy ways to think about yourself, the world around you, and you fit in. Unfortunately, there’s also plenty of regressive authoritarian propaganda that does not have any beneficial message to it, not to mention bizarre and disturbing filler.
That said, to decide the entire collection inherently somehow has more importance than other books is not helpful, untrue, and puts you on a frame of mind where it becomes way harder to actually learn from the morals of the story so to speak.
For better or worse, it is, after all, just a book.
- Comment on Should I unplug my smart tv from the internet? 4 weeks ago:
Well, yes, but actually no. At least in theory. Since it has a Wi-Fi antenna, a bad actor could connect wirelessly to it.
Likely to happen? I having the foggiest idea but I doubt it. Yeah, I’m paranoid. But I’m part of the generation that grew up with the invention of the internet. So can you really blame me?
- Comment on Should I unplug my smart tv from the internet? 4 weeks ago:
So I know for sure is avoid Roku like the plague! You cannot use it as a TV at all without a connection and creating an account.
- Comment on Should I unplug my smart tv from the internet? 4 weeks ago:
Well, the program is that the computer in my TV is a potential security issue. That said, there’s no way of knowing if I can trust updates to patch problems or create new ones, so… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
- Comment on Should I unplug my smart tv from the internet? 4 weeks ago:
Eh, I’ve always been paranoid about firmware patches and the like. Also, curiosity got the better of me; I had to see what the crap smart features were like.
You do make a very good point though!
- Comment on Should I unplug my smart tv from the internet? 4 weeks ago:
Yes. I connected mine, checked for updates, then factory reset it and did not enter any network login.
This only works on certain brands I’m afraid…

Now, in theory at least, do they even have the authority/jurisdiction/whatever to execute a state warrant, let alone “civil warrant”?
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think they’ll respect the law. Just curious if anybody here has info…

That sounds expensive. Unless, of course, you’re more comfortable not holding into any thought. 🤣

I’ve been starting to wonder just how much this shit “phones home”. Because, obviously, this technology can be used to increase the capabilities of corporate surveillance.

Yup. If I remember correctly, the percentage of bots immediately increased, though, but I could be wrong.

- Comment on Worldbuilding 1 month ago:
Yup. I always wondered what evolutionary advantage resulted in that type of thing happening. Now it feels a bit obvious, although of course nature is crazy complex, so now I wonder what other environmental factors would also lead to that sorta stuff happening. But if there’s deadwood piled up to the point it would choke off new growth, obviously don’t reproduce until it burns away.
- Comment on Worldbuilding 1 month ago:
Wasn’t there some effort to guide that particular evolution? Or was it really just one of those,“holy shit look at this” discoveries?
Now my curiosity is piqued; I may have to look that up later today.

- Comment on Ubisoft's annual report dictates that the consumers are the problem 1 month ago:
This reminds me of a “scandal” when I was much younger where the Intel CEO at the time made a statement to the effect that their customers are the enemy, simply because they weren’t willing to blindly open their wallets and give whatever they could spare to the corporation.
Sadly, people are stupid (groups of people, at least). And the disease of consumerism is devouring our society from the inside out.

Thank you for the additional clarification. And naturally, potentially mitigating solutions such as bike lanes are so often demonized in our society, not because it actually causes disruptions to traffic, though; I figure it really is all about drivers getting jealous because they see people on bicycles not getting stuck in traffic (in my not so humble opinion). Not to mention how many violations of basic road safety and laws get handwaved because “they need their car”.
But I do agree that endangering pedestrians is no solution. I guess it infuriates me that real solutions are ignored/refused for such ridiculous reasons.
- Comment on In New York City, Drivers Who Run Red Lights Get Tickets. E-Bike Riders Get Court Dates. 1 month ago:
Well, I can easily identify two. The standards applied to cyclists versus motorists, as well as the fact that commercial vehicles be civilian makes no difference. At least from your description.
Separate from that is the general problem that couriers are essentially coerced into behaving so irresponsibly by corporate greed, bit that’s a whole other can of worms of course.

That’s the largest exist I’ve heard for such an egregious double standard.
- Comment on YouTube app is the worst 1 month ago:
I manually disabled all link types for the YouTube app, then went to the settings for NewPipe and enabled all supported link types to open there instead. That way I can use YouTube for the occasional video that fails to open in NewPipe, but clicking on a link will open NewPipe by default. It’s tedious, but so worth it.

Reality check: there is no three seconds. You don’t get anywhere appreciably faster, you just put everyone around you in danger because of the foolish and reckless need to be “one car ahead”.
