Was getting strong The Secret of Monkey Island vibes from the screenshot. Will have to give this a go.
- Comment on How are the blatant anti-competitive practices of Apple just…allowed? How is this even possible? 4 days ago:
You dont have to jailbreak to sideload apps on iOS and this hasn’t been the case for a long time. The problem is that if you’re not in the EU, it’s still not as straightforward as it really should be. But it can be done.

That genie has long since left the bottle and I wouldn’t bank on being able to put it back in.
Instead of incessantly banning and censoring everything that might be remotely harmful and kicking the can down the road, perhaps we should be focusing on education and tackling the problems that make social media so toxic to begin with. It’s not by accident - these platforms are for-profit businesses and they benefit from encouraging toxic behaviour in the name of engagement.

I’d argue that this is just a continuation of billionaires buying up the media.

I think it does too, but the problem with nostalgia is that you forget about all the shitty parts and just remember the good bits. Tumblr is still owned by big tech oligarchs even if it is smaller than the other platforms, and is still vulnerable to the kind of enshittification that the fediverse is more insulated against. Enshittification actually came for Tumblr long ago but it looks positively tame in comparison with other platforms.

I’m weaning myself off it. Sadly there’s some communities that I’m active in on Reddit that either don’t exist on a federated platform or are so tiny that they’re functionally dead. Hopefully we can grow those communities though - if we want to preserve the internet and our democracies into the future, the cancer that is big tech needs viable alternatives.

Nonono this isn’t austerity, it’s sparkling cutting everything to the fucking bone. Totally different.
- Comment on Online gangs of teenage boys sharing extreme material are ‘emerging threat’ in UK 3 weeks ago:
From what I understand they tend to use Discord, which doesn’t use E2EE. A good chunk of them don,t seem particularly bright so just a netter of time while the low-hanging fruit is rounded up.
- Comment on Laurence Fox charged with sexual offence over photo of TV presenter 3 weeks ago:
This sad fucker just doesn’t know how to keep himself out of trouble does he? No doubt he’ll be blaming the deep state or the Jews before too long.
- Comment on Late 1900s 4 weeks ago:
There is nothing wrong with it other than it makes me feel ancient and I don’t like it.
- Comment on Sir Gareth Southgate: Boys need role models, not gaming and porn 4 weeks ago:
I’m genuinely not trying to be a dick here, but citing the Bible as proof of the existence of Jesus is kind of like citing a comic as proof of the existence of Batman. No non-Christian is going to accept that evidence.
- Comment on Luigi Mangione, accused of US CEO murder, depicted in London mural 4 weeks ago:
I wonder how many sons have been left behind as a result of their fathers having their insurance claims denied.
- Comment on PC gamers spend 92% of their time on older games, oh and there are apparently 908 million of us now 4 weeks ago:
Turns out that people like playing games that respect their time and aren’t a glorified second job. Who knew.
