- Comment on A pattern of negative posts about the BBC 16 hours ago:
Oh right that makes more sense, here’s me looking it up on Wikipedia and thinking it has to do with American cowboy films or something.
- Comment on A pattern of negative posts about the BBC 16 hours ago:
Genuine question: what’s “American shot” and how are we paying for it?
- Comment on Why do posts continuously end up "*Permanently Deleted*" here? 1 week ago:
Narcissism maybe? It’s infuriating and really dissuades me from contributing in-depth answers here, which is such a shame. If I’m responding to someone I’m not just responding to help the person, I want to help anyone who might be searching for an answer in the future. It seems like a real design flaw that the OP can unilaterally decide to (effectively) remove an entire topic on their whim when others have contributed more to it than they did.
- Comment on Anti-Zionism is not anti-Semitism, UK appeal tribunal confirms in landmark ruling 2 weeks ago:
Of course, there it is, they took their time on that one. It does kind of undermine the argument against the BBC though by posting fake quotes while waiting for the actual evidence.
What’s interesting is the BBC article from two years ago about the case contains much less bias.
- Comment on Anti-Zionism is not anti-Semitism, UK appeal tribunal confirms in landmark ruling 2 weeks ago:
That doesn’t contain the quote and was released months ago.
It’s not that I disagree with @BigMacHole@thelemmy.club 's sentiment here, I just think it’s bad to misattribute a quote like that, there’s enough misinformation going around as it is.
- Comment on Anti-Zionism is not anti-Semitism, UK appeal tribunal confirms in landmark ruling 2 weeks ago:
Was looking more for a link to an article. If they actually said that about the tribunal, that would be unhinged even by BBC’s standards.
- Comment on Anti-Zionism is not anti-Semitism, UK appeal tribunal confirms in landmark ruling 2 weeks ago:
Where did you see that?
- Comment on A Linux Version of Windows 11 2 weeks ago:
I suppose they could, but it would almost definitely be proprietary software and almost definitely include all the anti-features you see in Windows 11 which would defeat the point. If they released it as free software (FOSS) that would be an unqualified win but that’s very unlikely.
- Comment on A Linux Version of Windows 11 2 weeks ago:
Well Wine is native Linux software, so if you’re running something on Wine you’re (technically) running it natively on Linux, it’s a compatibility layer for Windows applications to run on Linux without breaking patents or having need to use Windows code. Of course clearly, as you know, there are shortcomings to Wine but that answers your question of where we are with this.

Then why bother us with it?
- Comment on 500,000 households cancel TV licence putting BBC future in jeopardy 5 weeks ago:
The problem is that TV is a slowly dying format, so any attempt at saving the BBC is an uphill struggle even with the best will for it. Which I think is a shame, I think it’s culturally important. It needed to have evolved quicker and sooner, but how exactly I don’t know.
- Comment on Political rivals vow to boycott byelection after Farage quits as MP 1 month ago:
Good, that’s the only way to play this one.
The other alternatives: if all parties had contested it would split the vote. Any united progressive candidate have trouble winning in Clacton. An all-party backed opposition candidate would have been unlikely and would easily be painted as “the establishment” by Farage.
As things are: an independent novelty candidate might actually have the best chance, small as it may be, of beating Farage if they can capture all the protest vote (the absolute majority of Clacton didn’t vote Farage in the last election). Or worst, most likely, case Farage wins a hollow victory unopposed by major parties, he hasn’t made his point, things stay the same only now he’s seen as wasting everyone’s time.

I don’t, really, separate issues.

- Comment on Has anyone ever actually had their vehicle tabs stolen? 1 month ago:
Never heard of it either, in the UK we used to have something called a ‘tax disc’ that was displayed in the window of a car but you’d have to break in to get that.
- Comment on Tough US-style courts to crack down on repeat offenders 2 months ago:
I wouldn’t hold it up as anything special still.
- Comment on Physical punishment of children is harmful and must be banned in England and Northern Ireland 2 months ago:
It should be treated at least the same as any other physical assault surely.
- Comment on Is there music I haven't heard because I only speak English? 2 months ago:
Are you asking whether there’s music in languages other than English?
- Comment on Do young people still say words like "taped"? 2 months ago:
That’s true. I would always say “filmed” for that which come to think of it alludes to even older technology.
- Comment on Do young people still say words like "taped"? 2 months ago:
My parents still do (these days to mean recording something on their DVR). I don’t think young people really watch TV like that do they?
- Comment on What Do People Attending a Tommy Robinson March Really Believe? 2 months ago:
I think they don’t believe anything, they just regurgitate the last thing they read in the tabloids, and they do it not through loyalty to the tabloids but purely through conformity to their friends who are also regurgitating the last thing they read in the tabloids. It’s the same mentality as football team supporters, they have no meaningful personal stake in “their” team but it provides a social role, and it’s harmless when it’s just football, let them have their fun, but it’s dangerous when it comes to the well-being of all the people in the country.
- Comment on UK Sees Lowest Viewing Figures for Eurovision Final Since 2010 2 months ago:
Almost certainly it wouldn’t be held in Israel, like when Ukraine won in 2022 it was held in the UK the next year. It’s a convention not a rule that the winning country hosts it the next year. Unless you mean that Israel winning itself would destroy the competition, that’s possible.
- Comment on UK Sees Lowest Viewing Figures for Eurovision Final Since 2010 2 months ago:
Because it’s a contest for members of the European Broadcasting Union. Technically Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia could enter if they wanted to.
- Comment on UK Sees Lowest Viewing Figures for Eurovision Final Since 2010 2 months ago:
Good, I gave it a miss and I’m normally a regular viewer. Not surprised Israel did well since those left watching are more likely to be pro-Israel, I half expected them to win.

No we still can, just the government pretends it can’t.

- Comment on Man hit by van in Birmingham after residents take down union flags put up by anti-migrant group 2 months ago:
I’d be interested in trying putting EU and LGBTQ flags under each one.
As a reminder, the “EU flag” is actually the flag of the Council of Europe which we’re still members of, so not a “foreign” flag at all. I wouldn’t personally put up flags since I don’t think that’s the thing to do, dare I say it not the British thing to do, but it could confuse them if done.

Not to defend Osbourne in any way but from a newspaper owned by DMG Media who the hell are they to be speaking?
- Comment on Is Kagi Worth It? 4 months ago:
I use it, I like it, though there is something in the back of my mind about the company that sets off alarm bells that I can’t quite put my finger on so I’m cautious. But I don’t mind the model of paying for online services in principle. I would say it’s about as good as DuckDuckGo was 10 years ago when it was still good (DDG has gone downhill like a lot of things in my opinion), and Kagi is the best search I can find now. I do research for work so I need the unlimited (middle) tier since I use a lot of search, I consider it reasonable value for money. I suggest doing the free trial and see how long it takes to run out before deciding which tier to choose.
- Comment on Is 71° F (21° C) the ideal weather to wear shorts? 4 months ago:
In which direction? Because if it’s somewhat warm but raining I’d be more likely to lean towards shorts since they’re easier to dry than long trousers.
