- Comment on Do young people still say words like "taped"? 1 week ago:
That’s true. I would always say “filmed” for that which come to think of it alludes to even older technology.
- Comment on Do young people still say words like "taped"? 1 week ago:
My parents still do (these days to mean recording something on their DVR). I don’t think young people really watch TV like that do they?
- Comment on What Do People Attending a Tommy Robinson March Really Believe? 1 week ago:
I think they don’t believe anything, they just regurgitate the last thing they read in the tabloids, and they do it not through loyalty to the tabloids but purely through conformity to their friends who are also regurgitating the last thing they read in the tabloids. It’s the same mentality as football team supporters, they have no meaningful personal stake in “their” team but it provides a social role, and it’s harmless when it’s just football, let them have their fun, but it’s dangerous when it comes to the well-being of all the people in the country.
- Comment on UK Sees Lowest Viewing Figures for Eurovision Final Since 2010 1 week ago:
Almost certainly it wouldn’t be held in Israel, like when Ukraine won in 2022 it was held in the UK the next year. It’s a convention not a rule that the winning country hosts it the next year. Unless you mean that Israel winning itself would destroy the competition, that’s possible.
- Comment on UK Sees Lowest Viewing Figures for Eurovision Final Since 2010 1 week ago:
Because it’s a contest for members of the European Broadcasting Union. Technically Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia could enter if they wanted to.
- Comment on UK Sees Lowest Viewing Figures for Eurovision Final Since 2010 1 week ago:
Good, I gave it a miss and I’m normally a regular viewer. Not surprised Israel did well since those left watching are more likely to be pro-Israel, I half expected them to win.

No we still can, just the government pretends it can’t.

Obviously bad but wasn’t this a breaking news story from several days ago? What’s new?
- Comment on Man hit by van in Birmingham after residents take down union flags put up by anti-migrant group 2 weeks ago:
I’d be interested in trying putting EU and LGBTQ flags under each one.
As a reminder, the “EU flag” is actually the flag of the Council of Europe which we’re still members of, so not a “foreign” flag at all. I wouldn’t personally put up flags since I don’t think that’s the thing to do, dare I say it not the British thing to do, but it could confuse them if done.
- Comment on Sharon Osbourne attending a Tommy Robinson march proves Kneecap were right about her 1 month ago:
Not to defend Osbourne in any way but from a newspaper owned by DMG Media who the hell are they to be speaking?
- Comment on Is Kagi Worth It? 1 month ago:
I use it, I like it, though there is something in the back of my mind about the company that sets off alarm bells that I can’t quite put my finger on so I’m cautious. But I don’t mind the model of paying for online services in principle. I would say it’s about as good as DuckDuckGo was 10 years ago when it was still good (DDG has gone downhill like a lot of things in my opinion), and Kagi is the best search I can find now. I do research for work so I need the unlimited (middle) tier since I use a lot of search, I consider it reasonable value for money. I suggest doing the free trial and see how long it takes to run out before deciding which tier to choose.
- Comment on Is 71° F (21° C) the ideal weather to wear shorts? 1 month ago:
In which direction? Because if it’s somewhat warm but raining I’d be more likely to lean towards shorts since they’re easier to dry than long trousers.

I believe they’re pronouncing France to rhyme with your pronunciation of pants, not the other way round, it only works for some accents, not mine either.
- Comment on Public invited to pick Sycamore Gap tree artwork 2 months ago:
The article is frustratingly cryptic, reading it (because there are so many gaps) I was left with the impression that this was talking about plans for some kind of permanent monument at the site, but doing a bit of digging the best I can tell this is purely about deciding what to do with the timber, not what should replace it at the site.

- Comment on Is there any good laptop cleaners so I can set it to max settings and get rid of bloware that are free? 2 months ago:
Never a good idea to use a computer with the preinstalled operating system. Always do a clean install, then you know exactly what’s on it.
- Comment on Which Linux Distribution has the best Community Support? 2 months ago:
Based on experience I’ve always found the Fedora community very helpful and knowledgeable, I wouldn’t exactly say humming with with activity but maybe the best quality to quantity ratio and not much drama.
- Comment on It’s Not Just Andrew, the Entire Monarchy Is Rotten 3 months ago:
Since you asked, I just thought the article seemed like a bit of a gossipy tangent of the more serious story of the day, and voted against it, it’s just a vote, not a monarchist, the opposite, just got fed up with too much monarchy for one day.
- Comment on Thumb-Key Speed 3 months ago:
Yes I’ve been using it in some form for about 15 years - FYI it originally started as the MessagEase keyboard; Thumb-Key is an open source replacement (maintained by none-other than Dessalines of Lemmy).
The reason I chose it is because I use Dvorak on desktop, but Dvorak is notoriously bad for one thumb typing so I thought if I was going to learn a new layout I may as well learn something that’s optimised for one thumb. As for whether it’s faster, I have nothing to really compare it to, I’m not anywhere near as fast as on my physical Dvorak keyboard (which I use significantly more) but I’ve never used anything else on touch screen.
- Comment on What's with companies naming things "MyNoun"? 3 months ago:
I think you’re probably right, though I feel like there’s something nagging me in the back of my mind that I’d seen that somewhere in software pre-Windows 95 but I can’t think of it. They were using it a lot in the 90s definitely.
- Comment on do most people really like the taste and smell of eggs? 3 months ago:
For me eggs are a better improver of foods than a base for a meal. I.e. I’ll rarely crave “eggs” in general, but I could be planning a meal of something else and then think “oh, an egg will be nice with that”.
- Comment on What type of laptop do you recommend for simply browsing the internet? 3 months ago:
More clumsy to use than a mouse/keyboard setup, smaller screen, fewer options when it comes to adblocking/privacy (or options in general).

- Comment on Great British Railways flies the flag as logo goes back to the future 5 months ago:
What’s insecure about using the British flag on a British state owned railway?
It feels like a forced sense of pride. If anything the British national railway should be a national symbol in and of itself, it shouldn’t need to be propped up by the union flag. I don’t hate the design either by the way, but it seems heavy-handed.
- Comment on Great British Railways flies the flag as logo goes back to the future 5 months ago:
Just because the rest of the world does something it doesn’t mean we should be doing it too. It has been noticed as a new trend.
- Comment on NHS staff who visit patients at home say St George’s flags can mean ‘no-go zones’ 6 months ago:
I think you’re missing the nuance here, flying the flag alone doesn’t make you a racist, but if it’s become culturally associated with racism then it’s a data-point that can build up that picture.
- Comment on NHS staff who visit patients at home say St George’s flags can mean ‘no-go zones’ 6 months ago:
It’s always been a sign that you’re a bit of a pillock to be honest, I don’t think it’s changed much in my lifetime.

Princess Diana Drive as well, built shortly after she died I recall, it was a bit controversial.
