- Comment on Discord confirms it's moving toward 'becoming a public company' as it hires a former Activision executive as its new CEO 1 week ago:
Except they are missing voice calls on Android, and don’t (as far as I have seen) have video or screen sharing yet.
Those two alone make it a poor replacement at the moment for my friend group. I appreciate the simple setup and all the 1:1 features they have so far, but video and voice are the main things we use discord for.
I have it set up and will try to get some techy friends on board to play with it, but it’s not really there yet to move everybody over. Hopefully the eventually self destruction of Discord will give Revolt the push it needs to finally be a suitable replacement.

Skype is dead, sites like ooVoo are long gone, TeamSpeak seems to be held up in part by game clans.
While I can’t say they actively killed the competition, they certainly gave plenty of services little reason to exist. Discord created such a good and new service, that there wasn’t any reason to leave it for a different service.

Seems to be Dwarf Fortress inspired:
- Start with 7 dwarves but you can build and support a population of hundreds.
- A simulated world with changing weather and seasons that have a big impact on gameplay.
- Every one of your settlers has their own needs and desires to fulfil as they work together for the common good.
- A deep crafting tree that leaves no natural resource unused, tied together into satisfying production chains.
- Progress through skill tiers to craft better tools and weapons.
- Trade with merchants to increase your wealth even further.
- Form up and train your military to battle monsters and invaders…
- …or play in Peaceful Mode to chill out with a relaxing city-builder experience.
- Twitch integration (using viewer names for settlers) to encourage stream audience interaction.
- Built “Mod-first” so that everything is moddable.

Really? Dang. I’ll have to look up the problems then.
- Comment on How old does my account have to be to upload images? 1 month ago:
A bit of an additional thing:
I’ve had too many problems using both the lemm.ee uploader and imgur uploader using Summit on Android. Some images just refuse to upload. Switched to Catbox so I didn’t have to deal with the constant failed uploads.
- Comment on How old does my account have to be to upload images? 1 month ago:
I recommend Catbox.moe
Imgur is convenient sometimes, but It’s impossible to trust them after they purged a large chunk of their images some time ago. They deleted all anonymous images, basically killing a large swath of old forums, guides, and sites containing information that we’ll never find again.
Plus, they run imgur like a tacky social media site now, not an image hosting site.
Another one I’ve tried. Works fine and is well known. imgbox.com
Stolen from the sidebar of r/imguralternatives. Haven’t used them myself, but they are well known:
- Lensdump | 100MB | NSFW allowed
- Imgchest | 20MB | NSFW allowed
- Postimages | 24MB | NSFW now allowed
- Cubeupload | 5MB | NSFW not allowed

- Comment on Valve adds "all the Team Fortress 2 client and server game code" to its Source mod tools, letting modders "build completely new games based on TF2" and publish them on Steam 2 months ago:
Lol. It’s so greedy of them!
Jokes aside. It’s an interesting distinction to make. Even though the source code is freely available, it doesn’t mean developers have free reign to do anything they want like they could with open source software. Apart from special circumstances, everything made with the source code will still be mods.

A few takeaways from the move:
- Any modifications must be released as mods
- Players downloading the mods must own the base game
- The mods must be free and no aspect of the mod can be monetized.
- The mods can now access TF2 steam inventory for cosmetics and weapons (but cannot modify the inventory)

- Comment on why can't there be a soda dispenser for energy drinks? 3 months ago:
My guess has a few factors to it (in no particular order):
Cost soda syrup is likely a lot cheaper than the chemical concoction for energy drinks.
Safety Energy drinks pose a much greater health risk if the concentrations are off. Companies would have to prevent young children from accessing the machines (if they are used in restaurants). They would also have to prevent customers from drinking too much. I can also imagine chugging a bunch of the syrup would likely kill you (it’s bound to happen).
Flavor Control soda companies already accept and plan for the difference in fountain vs bottled sodas. I feel energy drink companies want as much control as possible to keep their brand image perfect.

The people with no or few friends tend to be weird but not really bad in any meaningful way: socially awkward, shy, odd interests, neurodivergent etc. Difficult to get to know, plain and simple.
