- Comment on Can certain mods see "downvote or upvote brigading"? I don't care either way just wondering. Can any site see it? 1 day ago:
Besides Lemvotes, Mbin instances let anyone see upvotes.
- Comment on Are there any llms made from 100% public domain / permissively licensed training data? 3 days ago:
Apertus. Or at least so it claims, I haven't checked if their data sources (listed in this paper) corroborate their claims about them.
- Comment on If the legalization of drugs reduces crime, why can't the same be said about the legalization of guns? 1 week ago:
Legalization itself doesn't do much. What mainly reduces crime is regulations. And just by legalizing something, you're applying existing regulations to it.
Legalizing drugs means that someone selling drugs now counts as a legal vendor and needs to play by the same rules. Legalizing sex work means that brothels need to apply labor laws. Minimum wages and all that stuff.
Guns aren't going away, whether they're legal or not. But when guns are legal to sell, you can require licenses, background checks, and other requirements which wouldn't exist if it was illegal. Maybe you even want gun ownership to be in some kind of database so you have a better idea whom to suspect when gun crime happens. You don't get that when guns are illegal.
So in my opinion, getting rid of guns isn't a solution. It'll just make the problem more invisible. You should instead strengthen your regulations regarding guns. And teach people some discipline with them. I hear too many stories about third parties acquiring guns that are just lying around loaded, or children and dogs accidentally killing people by discharging the gun. How can someone just get guns into a school building? You guys need to address those issues, not ownership itself. Banning guns is a panic button, not a solution. It means you're giving up and shoving the problem under the rug.
My country also has high gun ownership, yet we don't share your problems in that regard. So clearly legal gun ownership isn't the issue. It's about gun culture, discipline, and regulation. All of which can be addressed without banning guns. But they have to be addressed, the US needs to change things from the status quo.
- Comment on Why does most of the world use WhatsApp as their messaging app rather than RCS/SMS? 5 weeks ago:
I think that's why OP asked about RCS, which is also internet but built into SMS apps.
- Comment on War attention priorities 1 month ago:
Most people care most about the wars they (1) here about all the time, or (2) affect them personally. But (1) is most important.
Iran and Ukraine are both of those. Israel kind of too but not to the same degree nowadays. I guess if it started today, people would care less, but there's already plenty of attention built up that doesn't simply dissipate.
But the ones you mentioned, I have heard of the Myanmar one I think either here or on Reddit, but never heard about the other two, and neither have I seen any news on the topic anywhere. Nor does this stuff particularly affect anyone in rich countries afaik.
I assume the reason why no one is talking about them is because of exactly that. Most people probably just aren't aware of them, or how they are going. Their attention is being hogged by other conflicts, and in general people don't feel like going out of their way to inform themselves about negative news. If it doesn't come their way on its own, that's it. - Comment on Lemmy or Piefed? 2 months ago:
That's a recent feature though, isn't it? If it's so important to you, why didn't you join Mbin instead which has had it for ages?
- Comment on When you vote why don't they just say something like this will raise your taxes for this and over here won't. Wouldn't it be simpler? 2 months ago:
The US already has huge issues with understanding what you're voting for. Why would you simplify it even further? You need to do the opposite if you want a healthy democracy. Make sure people are properly informed about what they're voting for.
- Comment on What does "Woke" mean to you? 2 months ago:
To me personally, "woke" means living in the real world.
A lot of people nowadays reject reality and prefer to live in a world of falsehood. They desire a simpler world, so they refuse to acknowledge the complexities of the world.
Woke people don't do that. They engage with reality, not fiction. Which is what makes them a danger to those that do prefer to escape to a simpler fictional world. Hence them denying and opposing woke. It's a defensive reaction to a perceived threat to their alternate worldview.
Or at least that's how I see it. - Comment on Why is gun violence lower in Switzerland than in the US? 2 months ago:
One reason I haven't seen mentioned yet is practicability.
Yes, people have the tools. But how do you get that tool to where you need it?
In the US I believe you can just carry weapons for whatever reason you want. That's not quite the case in Switzerland. If you've got a gun for military service, for example, you're only allowed to carry it from and to military service or the shooting range. You can't just go to a school with it. Same applies to other purposes. You can only carry a gun for the specific purpose you have your permit for. You can't just take it to a school or mall.
Plus, the people who have guns at home usually only have the guns, no ammo, iirc.
- Comment on Do you buy PC games from third party key sites or from Steam? 3 months ago:
I use IsThereAnyDeal. Don't really care about the source, as long as they're listed on ITAD, have a 70% or higher discount, and the purchase can be activated on Steam (or it's GOG). I trust ITAD to not list fraudulent sources.
- Comment on [deleted] 3 months ago:
Would it be dystopian if we don't even own our right to live anymore?
I'd disagree we have a right to live in the first place. If it was a right, we could refuse it. But that's actually illegal.
What we have is an obligation to live, not a right. And so we're already not in control in the first place.
- Comment on What are your thoughts on people who say hate speech is free speech? 3 months ago:
What are your thoughts on people who say hate speech is free speech?
Free speech isn't about a list of allowed words from which you can remove ones you dislike. It's the ability to speak your mind freely.
Hate speech is very much part of free speech. As is defamation. Banning them is limiting free speech. It's just that civilized countries determined that's justified and morally right in some cases and decided to define some red lines. But that doesn't remove hate speech from the umbrella of free speech.
- Comment on 3 months ago:
but would Codeberg's policies allow doing such thing ?
In its terms of use, Codeberg explicitly outlines under what license terms it provides code hosted on it:
- the right to use the content for any purpose, including both commercial and non-commercial purposes
- the right to make unlimited copies of the content and redistribute those copies to others, with or without charge
- the right to examine the content and determine how it works and/or how it was made
- the right to make their own modifications to the content, to use the content with those modifications privately
- and the right to redistribute copies of the content which include their own modifications, with or without charge
You are not allowed to upload code which you do not have permission to publish under these terms. Which means you can't just arbitrarily relicense code you got from Github, and you also can't upload Github projects with a more restrictive license, such as non-commercial ones.

- Comment on Why do some users have zero upvotes on their posts/comments? 8 months ago:
But there's zero information gained from a self upvote. If I didn't like my comment, I'd either delete it or edit it until I do.
Of course I like my comment if I keep it up, so a self upvote adds nothing.
The only advantage I see is to make this place look more like Reddit, which isn't really something I care about. - Comment on Why do some users have zero upvotes on their posts/comments? 8 months ago:
Might have to clarify that my instance (or rather Mbin in general) doesn't do auto upvotes.
Though it doesn't really change my stance. You can swap it around to removing the auto upvote, I don't really see the point behind that being possible either.
If you like your content, keep it up. If you don't like it, either edit it until you do or delete it.
Upvotes and downvotes are for judging the content of others, not your own. So be it adding one when there's zero, or removing the upvote automatically added by your instance, I don't see the point in either being possible. - Comment on Why do some users have zero upvotes on their posts/comments? 8 months ago:
In my opinion I shouldn't even have the ability to upvote my own comments. I don't really see the point behind doing so.
- Comment on Why is Minecraft able to be forced to put restrictions on online servers, but web browsers aren't held accountable for providing access to the web? 8 months ago:
They aren't. The restrictions are mandated by Microsoft, not governments.
They do have to take action in regards to their own Realms servers, but that's it. Restrictions on random unaffiliated Java servers are either for brand image or other selfish reasons. For example, someone here mentions chat for UK teens, that one is almost certainly to force ID verification into the game, not to actually comply with anything. It's for data harvesting.
- Comment on If the government raided your house and found a bunch of .mkv files but you insist its all legally obtained, how do they ascertain if they are actually pirated or not? 8 months ago:
I'm not a lawyer and haven't had such a situation before, but isn't the burden of proof supposed to be on the accuser, not the accused? They're the ones who need to prove the files have been illegally obtained, not the other way around.
- Comment on If the United States of America was renamed, what should it be? 8 months ago:
I think the US naming themselves after America isn't really any different from the European Union naming itself after Europe.
It's "United States OF America", not "United States that are America". It's a bunch of united states that exist in America, not the states that make up America.
Please assume that stale carrot man isn't in office and that the U.S. is currently being a reasonable and humane country that actually stands for democracy, liberty, and freedom.
It's not like the US was a leader in those things before Trump. He didn't invent the issues, he just made them more visible. The US has always overthrown democratically elected governments to install dictators, and people have complained about its own election system for ages. There's a lack of consumer and labor protections, and the fact you only have two right-wing parties and anything left of center is considered extremist opinions doesn't help at all. It's honestly hard to imagine the US actually standing for democracy, liberty, and freedom, beyond empty propaganda.
- Comment on Is it really worth starting a lemmy community? 9 months ago:
Don't forget the Lemmy Federate step, otherwise that would be the obvious answer to that last step. Especially if you're on a smaller instance.
Other instances won't get your community and posts therein automatically, only instances with subscribers do. Lemmy Federate automatically uses a bot to subscribe to the community from various instances that have opted in to the service, allowing your community to reach those instances from the start.
- Comment on Does each country have a book/library of the laws of the land that a commoner can consult to check if they're about to do something illegal? 9 months ago:

- Comment on Why isint lemmy more popular? 10 months ago:
most users find the most popular platforms and don't have a reason to move on
This is definitely a good point. Is even visible here, with not just Mbin but also Piefed still barely having users compared to Lemmy.
- Comment on Why isint lemmy more popular? 10 months ago:
federation and instances is a confusing prospect
Which is why we shouldn't frontload people with that stuff. They don't need to understand decentralization from the start, let them familiarize themselves with the fediverse first before throwing that at them. Just recommend a default instance, maybe change which every few posts if centralization is a concern. They'll pick up the idea of instances as they interact with the fediverse.
- Comment on Crosslinking posts from Mastodon -> PieFed or Lemmy 10 months ago:
Now to figure out the final step, how to crosslink posts.
What do you mean with "crosslinking" in this context?
You know how to view a threadiverse post from Mastodon.
You know how to post a Mastodon post to a threadiverse community. What else are you looking for?
- Comment on I messed up. what can I do to fix this... 11 months ago:
There are some platforms here that do have a karma system. Mbin does, and I think Piefed iirc had a similar but not same scoring system for users too.
- Comment on does anyone else have this impression of gruyere? 11 months ago:
Depends. If you get Gruyere in the US, there's zero relation to Switzerland there. The US declared gruyere a generic name and so its Swiss or French name protections are void there and thus no guarantee about origin is made.
In the EU there's the difference between (Swiss) Gruyere and French Gruyere which are quite different according to Wikipedia.
- Comment on Why do each gaming fraction (pc, consoles, mobile) hating each other? 11 months ago:
There are endless discussion on the internet why pc gaming is superior than consoles
It is objectively. It's the only platform which fully supports modding (and historically the only one that supported it at all) with sideloading (not through stores provided by the game dev). Modding is huge for the longevity of a game. At least in my experience, PC games tend to have more settings to customize your experience. You can install external tooling like Reshade and others. If you buy on GOG, you actually own your games. There are some games that just aren't suited to consoles, like RTS, while I can't think of any genre that works badly on PC. You also get to choose where you buy games.
That said. Consoles exist for a reason. They're ready-made systems that can play games designed for it without a hassle. You only have to worry about upgrading when a new console comes out, and you always know whether a new game will run on your console. You don't have to worry about stuff like driver updates either.
I think objectively speaking, PC is clearly better for gaming than console. BUT subjectively it's a different story. Most people would probably prefer consoles due to them being more accessible.
Just play your game and let other gamers enjoy their game too.
This is most important imo. At the end of the day, subjective enjoyment is what matters most, so that's where the comparison should go. And imo there's not much of a winner there, there's good and bad traits for either, and there's going to be different people preferring either.
- Comment on Will Lemmy instances be forced to verify users' ~~ages~~ identities? 1 year ago:
they can put out arrest warrants and fines
Of course they can, but they're unenforceable if the instance's operator has no presence nor assets in the UK. That's why I wrote "forced" in bold. They can issue shit, but that's where it stops.
and possibly have the person extradited to the UK
According to Wikipedia, extradition requires that the crime is such in BOTH countries. So no, I don't see that being an option here.
