I’ve only known them a couple years, but I think he wasn’t always like this. From what I hear he was a pretty cool guy back in the day, weird, but cool. Nowadays he watches YouTube shorts all day and complains about how everyone’s being brainwashed on tick tok. So I think he thinks he’s a free thinker while actively being brainwashed by the same thing he thinks he’s avoiding.
At the same time for someone to be so heavy into so many awful opinions they had to have always been there. Maybe he just hid them before but feels like he can openly talk about stuff because of the state of the current world.

They do… And I really don’t like to talk bad about children because it almost always comes down to the parenting, but they were some of the most miserable, rude children I’ve ever encountered. They were awful to my toddler in so many ways.
To be fair they’re both girls and they had to hear their dad go on a 20 minute rant about how all women should quit the workforce and stay at home continuously popping out as many babies as they can because they’re less capable than men but more nurturing. That started from me saying “a single income household should become achievable again”.
For a little more context that no one asked for but I think adds to it: his wife is a full on doctor, hard working, comes home and takes care of the kids and the house, and is an actual person.

I had a coworker over the other day because my wife loves his wife.
At one point he’s telling me that they’re coming out with AI sex robots that can do EVERYTHING and he’s going into detail like he read the spec sheet and got excited. He’s telling us how it will be the end of humanity because all men are going to divorce their wives, ditch their girlfriends and stop dating because they’re just going to be fucking robots.
I said I don’t see that happening on a large scale. I’m sure some guys will, but I doubt anyone who’s going to give up women to fuck robots would have been procreating anyway and we probably wouldn’t lose out on much in the gene pool. His wife started cracking up and agreeing with me, calling these guys freaks, and my coworker got real quiet and sulked into his chair.
So I know at least 1 person who would love to go to a robot strip club.

I just got jumbo quail a few weeks ago, my town won’t let you have chickens on less than 5 acres, so now I take my laptop out to the coop and sit with my hens for a few hours a day while I “work”. I started with 5, then bought another 5 and now another 10 are on the way.
Should get out first eggs any day.

I got 3 months paid paternity leave through a state program. A coworker who had a kid that same month chose to not use the state program and take 2 PTO days instead. I talked to him before hand and told him about the program but he said something like “I wouldn’t be much help, she’s done it twice already so she has it handled”. It was very evident how his wife felt about him at the Christmas party that year.
She sought out my wife, who she knew had a kid recently too and my wife brought up how nice it was to have me home for those first few months and somehow the state program came up in the conversation. She then booked it over to me and asked me about it, not knowing what was going on or thinking much about it, I told her about it and that I can’t believe coworker didn’t do it. Then all hell broke loose. This tiny little lady dragged out my 6 foot heavy set coworker by the ear, calling him every name in the book. She made him use all his PTO days and went to spend new years somewhere warm. He bitched about how hard it was taking care of 3 kids on his own for weeks.
‘Funny’ enough all the guys in the office thought she was being ridiculous but all the women were praising her.

- Comment on Lutris now being built with Claude AI, developer decides to hide it after backlash 3 months ago:
I use AI to look at my git diffs before I push them up. I use a local LLM and specifically instruct it to look for typos, left over debug prints, or stupid logic.
It’s caught quite a few stupid things that I’m apparently blind to and my coworker appreciates it.
That’s not to say I’d sit back and let it write whole features, pushing it right to master after a short skim… Like someone else I know has started doing. But it can absolutely have a useful purpose.

A few weeks ago I was at the store picking up a few things for my sick kid. The very first aisle I go to as I’m trying to leave it a lady pulls into the aisle to look at whatever was on the end cap and puts her cart right in the middle of the aisle so I can’t get through with my cart. She saw me, we made eye contact for a second and I moved to the right of the aisle. I get to the end and she’s just standing there, not even looking at stuff just looking at me waiting for her to move. After about 20 seconds I can’t believe I have to say anything so I just go “excuse me” and she scoffs and says “you’re fine”. Another 10 seconds and I have to say it again, “excuse me I’m trying to get through” and I don’t know what was going through her head but she started freaking out, “go ahead and get through then I don’t know why you’re standing there”. So I do just that, I used my cart to push hers out of the way (very intentionally just enough to get through) and she lost it. I just proceeded on my way but even after I turned down the next asile I needed something from she was still yelling. This was like 10:30 at night, the store was almost empty so there was plently of room.
This was in an expensive grocery store in a pretty wealthy area. In contrast on my way home I stopped at the poppy shop around the corner because they have a drink I like for a good deal and there was someone who looked like they were emptying their pockets by the trash can but checking out a couple receipts before throwing them away who was blocking the door, I said excuse me when I was a few steps away and he apologized, told me to have a great night and held the door open for me.
- Comment on Anon's neighbors have chickens 6 months ago:
It’s illegal on my town to have chickens on anything less than 5 acres. I have an acre that backs up to woods far enough away that a couple hens would be no problem, but nope. One of my neighbors has 4.6 acres and used to have chickens but had to get rid of them when they changed the law. Its extra sad that my house is an original 1900s farm house with the original barn that used to have donkeys, chickens, goats and a few cows sitting on 20 acres, now I’ll get fined to oblivion if I so much as get 1 quail.
- Comment on Is there an optimal home/apartment size that most people would be happy with? 6 months ago:
My wife and I bought our first house before we had kids. It was ~1000sqft, 3 beds 1 bath and perfect for just us. Granted we had 2 dogs and 5 cats so it felt hectic at times, but with a nice little back yard the dogs we’re much more calm.
After having 2 kids it started feeling cramped, 100% doable, but as someone who works from home I was dying for more space. The layout was also awful, it seemed like one of the previous owners tried to make it “open concept” and didn’t think it through, so there was nowhere you could go to get an ounce of privacy aside from the bedrooms which were 8x8 all around.
We recently moved to a 1900sqft house and its absolutely great. I can take work calls while everyone’s yelling in the living room and its not a bother. My toddler can play whole the baby’s napping without waking him up. The bedrooms are big with honestly huge closets. Before I was sharing a closet with my toddler and mostly living out of hampers, now he has a closet that his bed could fit in.
My only desire is am extra to for guest if anyone needed to stay with us for a while. I’m hoping to fix up the basement soon and make it a nice 900sqft guest house type thing.
I think we have more space than we necessarily need now, but that makes me happy.

I unfortunately am in the middle of a huge renovation for a new house I just bought 3 week ago. I guess I’m fucking up big time but I’ve had to buy quite a bit of stuff this week. My dryer broke, dishwasher shit out, heater went kaputs, I needed some lumber to keep my porch from caving in.
At least the only new thing I bought was the dishwasher because the panel to get it working would’ve cost me $200 since it’s so old. Everything else has been fixed instead of replaced.
- Comment on When you wake up, how long does it take for your brain's "OS" to "resume from hibernation"? 7 months ago:
I usually get “stuck” in whatever horrid nightmare I was having before waking up. For the first 5-10 minutes I’m not sure if I’m still in a dream or not, then I spend a while panicking about how I couldn’t figure out reality and if anything is real.
Although things are usually a lot better when my son decides to sleep with us. He’ll wake me up before the sun just yelling the most nonsensical stuff and it snaps me back to reality pretty quick.
My favorite from this week was “wake up daddy put your jeans on! (Throws my jeans at my face) We’re late for work!” At 5:30am. I work from home an don’t have a set time to clock in but oh boy I clocked in early that day.

As a kid I always said I wanted to “work on the computer at home so I could take care of my farm”.
Which coming from where I grew up was about as realistic as owning the moon.
I do think dreams have gotten more generic with a lot of kids aiming for that influencer life, but the other day I heard a neighborhood kid say he wants to be a deep sea monster truck driver. I’m not sure what that means but I love it.

Out of the 8 cousins in my family the 2 of us that didn’t go to college are the only ones who own a house. I didn’t finish 10th grade and I’m looking at buying my second house and trying to figure out how to keep my current one to give to my mom.
My cousins are pretty cool (aside from a couple who are very spiteful) but my aunts and uncles act like I scammed them all for everything they had.
- Comment on Bernie Sanders says that if AI makes us so productive, we should get a 4-day work week 11 months ago:
I think your missing something big here.
A while back when one of the popular models came out it blew all the others away in benchmark tests. That got my coworker and boss super excited, we started coming up with different ways AI can help us. Thankfully as I pointed out, our software is proprietary and super secret, and all it took was a couple Google searches to find out a lot of those companies leak data like crazy and AI will just tell other people your secrets if they ask in the right way. So we needed to run our LLMs locally, but for that we’d need some beefy specs. I did the research, wrote a neovim and sublime plugin to integrate our local LLMs in a ‘copilot’ kind of way. My boss ordered my coworker and I whatever the new macbooks are with 128gb of memory to fit our lovely AI models, bought me a desktop tower and a few GPUs. Then I went on a 3 month paternity leave, came back and have heard nothing about AI since aside that my coworker switched to vs code to try and use continue but got frustrated, switched back to sublime and doesn’t use AI anymore.
So yeah, AI got me 2 new maxed out spec machines and 2 weeks of fuck around time writing plugins that were not nearly as complex as everyone thought, just because AI was involved.
For real though, I’ve tried quite a few times but 9/10 it fails me and I end up spending more time messing around with prompts than it would’ve taken me to do the thing. Occasionally when I have a mile long error message or something super obscure I’ll pass it to ollama and it seems to do well with wittling it down for me, that’s about it.
- Comment on What programs do you wish a good FOSS alternative existed, but doesn't or most of the FOSS alternatives simply aren't good? 1 year ago:
I wish there was a good FOSS (or just works on Linux) alternative to adobe lightroom so I could stop fixing broken windows shit on my wife’s computer.
She’s a photographer and does a lot of heavy editing stuff. I know there’s some alternatives but she says nothing comes close for what she needs to do, and from the few examples she showed me I agree.
I don’t know what the fuck Microsoft is doing but almost everytime there’s an update something breaks on her laptop. The only thing she does is use lightroom, occasionally Photoshop and Firefox.
I recently had to use her laptop to make a windows installer USB for someone and Rufus was cool. When installing windows though it just didn’t see any of the drives in the laptop? Apparently I had to load storage drivers specific to that laptop, which weren’t available anywhere online I could find. I managed to get it working by loading a bunch of unrelated drivers for a different HP model laptop, none of them related to storage. I think it was the Bluetooth driver that got it working, after it installed nothing was working, no mouse, speakers, USB ports. I had to install all of those same drivers again for some reason. Before that just to make sure the drive wasn’t bad I installed Debian on there and what do you know, it just did it, because of course it did, and everything worked.
I got way off topic, but again what the fuck is microsoft doing?

This is how my job is. If something goes horribly wrong after hours we get a text, but if I’m not at home doing nothing already then it has to wait and I’ll get to it when I can, and that’s expected.
In exchange we get to sort of do what we want and leave early whenever. Yesterday I took off at lunch and went sledding with the family. I only ever use my PTO for actual vacations or days where I’ll be completely unavailable.
I personally love it, I would love on call pay too but that freedom to take my son sledding on a snow day without having to lose pay is incredible. There’s only ever been 1 emergency issue in the past 2 years that I’ve had to hop on after hours to take care of.

My first Christmas living here when the fireworks we’re going off in the middle of the night I called the cops for the first time in my life. Turns out Joe used to be a cop in the next town over and all my neighbors already knew he was basically immune. I ended up getting a noise complaint because of my dogs, as the fireworks were still going off on the street behind me.

Every holiday with fireworks I have to stay up ridiculously late to keep the dogs calm and soothe my toddler back to sleep multiple times.
We had a crazy thunderstorm until about 11:30 that kept my son up extra late. I hate thunderstoms but thought at least there won’t be fireworks. 11:31 ole reliable firework Joe around the corner was out there doing his thing and it seems like he doesn’t plan on stopping soon.
Also firework Joe sets off a ridiculous amount of stuff at 12am on Christmas eve.

That’s always a possibility especially when every company under the sun is making smart things on a whim for as cheap as possible. I don’t trust any of them as far as I can throw an oven.
I have a few random smart things, but before I connect them to the internet I make sure they have a decent api that I can use, block external access from the router and set up a little interface so that I can VPN into my home and control stuff if I need to. So in order for anything to be compromised my whole network would have to be owned. Which is still possible but I trust that a lot more than letting 20 different apps for each device have access to anything in my home.
