I’ve been involved in a number of cults, both as a leader and a follower. You have more fun as a follower, but you make more money as a leader.

- Comment on The U.S. government may finally mandate safer table saws 8 months ago:
That’s bullshit. They need to expire Sawstop’s patents and give other manufacturers a couple years to duplicate that tech if they are going to require all table saws to include what is currently proprietary technology.

- Comment on So Much Produce Comes in Plastic. Is There a Better Way? Climate-friendlier alternatives are in the works. Here are some that might be coming to a grocery store near you. 8 months ago:
My grocery just has bare produce in bins. They offer disposable plastic bags, but they are not required. I take 2 large totes. I put all my produce in one while shopping. When I to to check out, I put the full bag on the conveyor belt in front of my other groceries and ask them to scan/weigh the produce and put it in the other bag. Then my non-produce groceries go in the other bag.
- Comment on How Much Would You Pay to Make Sure You Never Sawed Off a Finger? 8 months ago:
I would pay about $100, considering that’s about my total investment in sleds and featherboards and push sticks. My fingers are never in the path of the blade when it’s moving.

I don’t think 99% of people in America would ever stop to think, ‘What would I do if I woke up tomorrow and all access to digital media disappeared?’
Bruh, I don’t want to be the one to tell you what the first D in DVD stands for.

ChatGPT has no burden to respect HIPAA in that scenario. The medical provider inputting your PHI into a cloud-based LLM is violating your HIPAA rights in that case.

So would you now agree with the original comment that said Wikipedia is not a reliable SOURCE of accurate information? It’s a great starting point and a potential resource that can be used as a bibliography of possible sources, but it’s never a good source itself. Even as a bibliography, you have to consider whether the available references for an article are biased – they don’t always paint a fair picture.
- Comment on Netflix Poised to Raise Prices in 2024 as It Continues to Gain Share of TV Viewing 9 months ago:
Unfortunately, I’m still supporting them by proxy. T-MOBILE is the only cell provider that gets reasonable coverage around my area and they give us free Netflix basic. We were paying a few dollars extra to expand that to 4 screens, but we cut out the extra bit last year.
- Comment on Bluesky signups are now open to the public 10 months ago:
Yeah, this is not the way to roll out a social media platform anymore. You’ve gotta get critical mass as fast as humanly possible. When twittermusk happened and bluesky popped up shortly thereafter, I put in a request for invitation. Later, I joined the fediverse, moved on to other things, and several months ago, I got an email informing me that I can finally join bluesky! How exciting, but I had already moved on with my life and was no longer interested in trying their platform. I didn’t even click the link.

Though it makes me sad to think we needed to make “hopepunk” a word; how is having hope a “punk” thing? :|
It’s punk af. Punk is a leftist/inclusive/anti-authoritarian movement that focuses on self-reliance and direct activism to get shit done. A lot of the general punk scene has been all over the board on their optimism/pessimism about our ability to affect meaningful change. Recently, subgenres of punk have sprung up that are very much still punk, but focus on one category of change or have a more optimistic outlook. Solarpunk is a branch of the punk movement with a green focus. Hopepunk focuses on can optimistic outlook with traditional punk values. Fashion-wise and music-wise, they tend to lean towards greens/blues or brighter/lighter colors or more folk-punk or upbeat tunes.
Weird Barbie would definitely qualify as hopepunk.
Just like any other sub-genre, though, if it rubs you the wrong way, it’s generally fine to just refer to it as the parent genre. Hopepunk is still punk, so feel free to call it that if it works better for you.

- Comment on Inventor of NTP protocol that keeps time on billions of devices dies at age 85 11 months ago:
It’s a protocol named NTP. If you want to say “the ___ protocol”, you can say “the network time protocol” or “the NTP protocol”. Both are correct, even if the latter is technically redundant. You would sound really weird if you insisted on saying “the NTP”. Let’s not bring the worst parts of reddit to the fediverse. Needlessly pedantic is something we can move beyond.

Profitable? I thought it was a loss leader to get people into Amazon’s gaming ecosystem.
I’d care if it was profitable when it was on its own, but now that it’s part of Amazon, I assumed it was just part of a Prime sub.
- Comment on What difficult games/game challenges did you give up on? 11 months ago:
You might give it a try – it may just work for you. Not everybody has the same issues, and I’m sure I’ll be able to figure it out later when I have time to troubleshoot it. This is just a busy time of year for me, so as long as my work stuff works, I’m good, and gaming has to sit on the backburner for a bit.
- Comment on What difficult games/game challenges did you give up on? 11 months ago:
Gave up on gaming in general. Moved to Linux back in October. Had issues getting my games to play because of various issues between Nvidia 535/545 and Wayland, Xorg, or the steam/proton/lutris/aagl/hgl things I tried. Then work got too busy and I’ve put gaming on the back burner 'til I have more time to troubleshoot it (hopefully with new Nvidia/Wayland packages).
