Some people care more about driving adoption than being a federation absolutist my dude.
If you haven't watched a YouTube video in the last year I'll give you $20.

Odysee is one of the biggest distributed video hosting platforms, equivalent to PeerTube. It's not sketch, but the embed isn't working for some reason. That is on the instance admin.
- Comment on What is this pit used for? 11 months ago:
Could be a hog house sewage slurry lagoon, I see what looks like a pump out on the far right corner. I'm not sure about the humps on the bottom, but they might control the current to avoid a whirlpool effect when pumping out the pond. Just guessing here.

I have been playing Shogun Showdown, which is a fun but difficult strategy roguelike "deck builder-ish". I'm not sure I'll stick with it through full unlocks. I have been tempted by Cobalt Core as well, though the price has bounced me off of it for this month at least.
- Comment on Dream Projects! What Would You Build If You Had an AGI? 1 year ago:
Mastodon, you're talking about Mastodon, lol.
Anyway I'd build an service that provides free wifi at local businesses, then allows users to opt-in to a service that matches clients of those businesses with each-other based on common interests. Trying to encourage the establishment of hangouts / Third Places as a normal in society again.
Also possibly an application that tracks user input and the value of their input to the accomplishment of stated goals for the purpose of profit sharing. Essentially an automated accountability layer for cooperative projects and business ventures, integrated with automated project management based on Natural language processing.

Sounds like Tumblr. Mastodon or Kbin/Mbin on the Fediverse do this too.
- Comment on Why are pipes used in plumbing more than hoses? 1 year ago:
@ALostInquirer Yes, Pex is pretty good for a lot of things, though it does have it's weaknesses. For instance it is UV sensative and will break down and crack of left in the sun. Also, the fact that it is often joined with compression fittings like the proprietary Sharkbite connectors does make assembly faster, but the failure rate of those components is higher than an adhesive bonded sleeve fitment. Being flexible also has its downside, for while it is nice to be able to bend the pipe to conform to angles, you do have to bend it to each and every stud penetration individually rather than being able to thread a hard pipe through all in one motion.
- Comment on Why are pipes used in plumbing more than hoses? 1 year ago:
@ALostInquirer As others have pointed out it is largely a matter of price and durability. My background is in industrial equipment so keep that in mind. It is worth noting what differentiates pipe from hosing at least in my industry, pipe is a tube made of a single solid material of a certain thickness, tubing is a single material tube of a thinner wall thickness, and hose typically consists of multiple layers or materials to maintain flexibility while still being durable. Some industries like medical may call a flexible tube of a single material a hose, but this is usually colloquial and not the official terminoly found in standards and regulation.
Because hoses are made of multiple materials and typically laminated or woven and adhered together they are much more complex to manufacture, and so more expensive, often at minimum 5x as expensive. When you look at hoses meant to last for decades this can go up a lot, 10-20x, this is because flexible materials in general degrade over time and become brittle and/or porous, prone to springing a leak. The methods used to prevent this require expensive chemicals, or patented processes which keep prices high.
PEX is growing in popularity because it is flexible and durable but relatively inexpensive, only 1.5-3x as expensive in cost of materials as CPVC typically. PEX is a type of pipe/tubing made of Cross-linked Polyethylene, which is a singly polymer, Polyethylene, that has been either treated with a chemical such as a peroxide or silane, or irradiated with an electron beam, to induce cross-linking of the long-chain polymers. This Cross-linking makes the material much more durable and elastic, while requiring only a single treatment and no lamination or weaving. As such PEX can be manufactured more cost effectively than hose, making it a good middle ground between rigid pipe like cPVC or copper for potable water applications.

@CaptObvious Corporations are subject to boycot, individuals to dialog. If an individual Israeli takes a pro-war/apartheid stance online then they should be challenged, but if they are for peace and reconciliation then they should be supported.

- Comment on We have had guns for 200 years but mass shootings only became common in the last 30. So what changed? 1 year ago:
@Siegfried and there have been mass shootings outside the USA, don't forget what happened in Norway for example. In the US the mental health and social support infrastructure is weak, so the meme is actualized more often.
- Comment on We have had guns for 200 years but mass shootings only became common in the last 30. So what changed? 1 year ago:
@dope Once a meme hits mainstream consciousness it is tough to get it to go away. Columbine out school shootings in the mind of every child of that generation, and since then toxic online forums filled with trolls have kept the idea alive be it "an hero" "unalive yourself" and just generally the nihilistic attitude of if you feel bade enough about yourself to consider killing yourself, you might as well take out some others you hate with you. This is mental illness at its core, but with the enablement of technology and toxic online "community" culture.
Then there are spin off effects of this mentality combined with the impression of the efficacy of terrorism from a psychological imprint perspective, and some narcissists will mass kill for "the cause". Again mental illness at its core, with a different "community" dynamic.
In both of these cases it is the meme, in the original sociology sense of the word, that has caused the rise of the behavior. The cultural condition of alienation and anonymous communication on the rise, combined with overall eroded access to in-person and in-patient mental health services due to the privatized health system, keeps the meme breeding in the alienated cultural class.
- Comment on Why not just let people use opioids? It's cheap. People like it. Arguably healthier than weed, alcohol or tobacco. Addiction isn't an issue if you can stay supplied. 1 year ago:
@dope legalize all drugs, provide clean drugs to users via regulated dispensaries or pharmacies, take all money from the drug war and allocate to mental health services including inpatient rehab. It works, check Portugals record on heroin use.
That said, cannabis has a way better afety record than any of the other substances mentioned.
- Comment on If the equator is the hottest part of the world, why aren't the deserts there? 1 year ago:
@Zerlyna @Zerlyna because desserts are places with very low precipitation, which. Is correlated with but not solely caused by high temperatures. Due to proximity to the ocean and existing wind patterns much of the tropics experiences high rainfall.
The obvious exception is the Sahara which is landlocked for the most part and no longer favored by the Jetstream or other wind patterns, so it has a short and low volume monsoon rainy season. Once upon a time there was a green Sahara though, with better winds and good rains.

- Comment on What did you thought about Castlevania Nocturne? 1 year ago:
@icepuncher69 I haven't watched it yet, I have just started rewatching the original series for spooky season. Let's be real though, even though he is a grade A creep, Warren Ellis is one of the best writers of our generation for comics an animation, and he exercised a lot of control as prroducer and writer of Castlevania. It will be very difficult for another writer to step into his shoes and not disappoint in some way.
