- Comment on “You are the most hated demographic at game events.” A major Japanese indie game showcase is waging war on “unsolicited advice dudes” 3 days ago:
But see, that’s an almost naive take. A convention is not a professional environment. The social contract isn’t set, so it is two strangers meeting each other for the first time. The dev watched me flail about for five minutes before finally giving me the answer, so if I turn around and state the obvious “I was confused and didn’t realize the water wasn’t hazardous” it could easily be taken as a condescending statement. A belief that I think the dev is so stupid that he can’t figure out why I was having trouble.
So I had just a mere moment to figure out whether the dev understood where the problem was, and break it to him if he didn’t. Hence the question. Not a rhetorical question, mind you… a question hiding my information with a get out of jail free card. We were both there watching me humiliate myself, so how do I say most people are taught not to launch others into water without confirming they can swim, with this dev possibly being thin-skinned and unprofessional?
Ask a question. Why not make the cliff a gradual beach into the water to indicate it’s not a hazard?
The dev could have easily answered with:
I reused the cliff from elsewhere to save memory
or
I wanted to give people a chance to familiarize themselves with the controls before moving on
or even
I didn’t have enough colors
and that would have been the end of the exchange. The information was passed, we both knew I struggled, and now we both know why.

Am I an unsolicited advice dude? I was at a convention playing an indie demo. The game had an island on a 2D field, with an invisible wall on the left, and a very clear cliffside and water on the right.
I spent a good 5 minutes looking like an idiot trying to figure out where to go, testing the borders, picking up the only item, putting down the only item, before giving up. The dev said to just go into the water. I asked “Why not make that cliff a gradual beach into the water to indicate it’s not a hazard?” and I got a brutal “the game already shipped and I’m not here for feedback” which immediately soured the whole experience. It’s like… why are you here then? Just set up the demo on steam and skip the fan interaction completely.

- Comment on PlayStation 3 emulator RPCS3 can now auto-configure games for you 3 weeks ago:
I wonder if they think RPCS3 is currently too volatile a project to deliver a static database with the download.
I know a few people who are always “latest is greatest” but it is nice to have a matching config to what is being installed.

OpenRCT2 is 100% the definitive way to play Roller Coaster Tycoon 1 & 2.
But I would never recommend a new player try OpenRA. The game has stellar multiplayer support but they just can’t figure out the campaign scripting at all. Go with the remaster collection instead.

gog has a bunch of tweaks for the stuff they host. I’m guessing it’s either a clause in the contract for their storefront, or this is a volunteer for the game preservation program.
- Comment on Do you preorder games? 4 months ago:
I buy mainly physical games.
Will I preorder a AAA game that will have 18,000,000 copies sitting around after 6 months? Hell no.
Will I preorder a physical title from a small-medium dev/publisher that I will never see again? If they have a track record of making stuff I like.
- Comment on The Knightling Did Everything Right - It Still Struggled to Sell | Beyond the Pixels Podcast 4 months ago:
I swear 95% of the stuff Steam recommended is reasoned with because it is popular and not because it’s something I would play.
Even when they say it’s related to a library item, it’s not even tangential. Like… Escape the Backrooms is not like Terraria. In any sense. They put that there because Youtubers are selling it.

and of course, this will be misconstrued. The executives will shout “look! people don’t want physical ownership!” and the push to digital rentals will continue… and result in even higher prices when they pull a Netflix.

- Comment on Welcome To Armored Core - A Chronological Breakdown Of FromSoftware's Legendary Mecha Series 5 months ago:
28 years and there is still nothing close to it. Either they focus too much on flight like Zone of Enders and Daemon X Machina, or they ground it too hard like Front Mission Evolved. No happy middleground.
I really thought with the success of Fires of Rubicon that we’d get a decent attempt at a clone.

- Comment on [Whitelight] You Don't Hate Remasters Enough 7 months ago:
I recently played Final Fantasy XIII on Xbox Series X. I was amazed at how great it looked when output at modern 4K with 60fps and 16x anisotropic filtering. The gameplay was still crap, but amazing to look at given it was on 360 originally.
Because of that experience, I am a little more forgiving for 360/PS3 generation. Those games were mostly running 720p frame buffers (or worse) and seriously gain a lot when given some shine.
(This completely ignores the fact that PC would naturally have these abilities without an additional purchase)

I don’t recall any choices that mattered. They are all fake choices like “Do you want to be rivals: yes/no” and choosing no just repeats the question.
I only singled out Arven because his character started out kind of bratty and my opinion of him flipped completely by the end of the game.
- Comment on What’s the best written Pokémon game? 9 months ago:
Sw/Sh were a real low point. They boiled the story down to “Let the adults handle it” and left you just running between gyms the entire game.
It’s honestly been too long since I’ve played the older games to judge their writing… but I did play Scarlet recently, and have to give props to Arven’s storyline. It is a shame the game is at Resident Evil 6 levels of unfocused, and brain-dead levels of easy.

- Comment on Ex-Bungie Developers Create TeamLFG, A New PlayStation Studio - Game Informer 11 months ago:
Yeah, that’s kind of why I asked. Gamestop propped up their numbers by bundling the magazine with their discount card. A lot like Apple pushing that U2 album via iTunes and calling it #1. Game Informer wasn’t selling on it’s own merits, so I think the chance of it rallying with it’s old staff is slim.

Doesn’t work on Nintendo, for some reason. Mario Tax expanded to anything first or second party, so the best you’ll see is $20 off new price on Mar10 for the games that came out 5 years ago. It’s like every retailer came to the agreement that Nintendo games don’t depreciate.
