Many teachers disagree with hardline attendance policies, report suggests

  This issue of attendance (which is currently the top priority for schools) is often framed as being parents being soft of their kids or about taking holidays in term time. UK state schooling is unsuitable for many children and the 10% is the tip of the iceberg. For lits of children - particularly neurodivergent and disabled - mainstream schools are hostile and brutal places. For children without additional needs its pretty much the same. There persists a weird “survival of the fittest” mentality in UK education.

  I’ve been recently reading about Japan’s Yutori education where the Japanese govt attempted to reduce the academic demands on children in order to promote their happiness and wellbeing. It remains controversial there but I’d certainly like to see this happening in the UK. (Or at the least parents given the choice of enrolling their children in Yutori-style schools here.)
