Greater investment means more they need a bigger return.
You can get indie games with a political perspective, but corporations love money and a bigger audience means more money.
Hollywood worked with Hitler in the 1930’s to keep access to the German market. It also jumps when China says so it can have access to Chinese markets.
Starting with a concept that means you have to region lock one of the most lucrative gaming markets out of buying your game is a non-starter.
why do FPS games for example refrain from depicting actual wars (Gulf war, Iraqi & Afghani conflicts) as they are from a historical standpoint?
There are games that do real historical wars, but the problem with FPSs is that you end up relating to the side you’re playing with. You don’t see the problem there? Whatever side you choose, you’re going to be emotionally pulled to supported killing the other side. Maybe acceptable when those people don´t really exist (with the notable exception of Nazis), but problematic when you’re identifying actual populations.
I think there are strategic games that point to the difficult of fighting an insurgency; I think there’s been one for Vietnam and one for Afghanistan.
