It’s referring to events that did actually happen. In 1979, Sweden officially classified homosexuality as an illness. The country has strong employee protection for calling in sick. Some Swedes used this to protest the classification by calling out of work claiming they were feeling too gay to come into work that day. The government soon reversed the decision classifying homosexuality as an illness.
