Never had a chance but too important as a trade and security partner. Iirc Turkeys big population would give it disproportional power in the EU. Borders wouldn’t be a problem anymore as the EU has also Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine and in future Armenia as membership candidates.

Turkey has been an explicit dictatorship since 2016, when Erdogan faked a coup against himself and has largely used that as an excuse to militarize against the government and populace.
This raid, like the raid the year before, and at least 100 other raids against opposing political parties since 2016, is just another blatant action by one of the most violent dictatorships in recent history.
Turkey is what people pretend Iran is.
