I selected English in the languages in the settings, but I still consistently see languages that I don’t know.
As a first-language English speaker: there’s maybe two whole communities that I scroll past on my day-to-day that aren’t in English. I’m not sure why a setting would make much difference.
Guy pick posts from “all>hot”. Is then upset that he’s seeing all posts from all communities.
Did I understand that correctly?
Still weird af. I’m on hot as well and as I said, only like 2,maybe 3 communities I see per day aren’t in English. Ich-iel, informatica, and similar. Never enough to concern myself over. Perhaps it’s the instances? I have .ml, and a couple of others blocked, but I can’t think of any specifically that aren’t English primarily.
I think language is supposed to be set and your language selections should do it automatically but my guess is the default is english and many don’t manually update the setting. This is a total guess that someone who actually runs things could verify or not. Anyway I have the same issue and a related thing that took me awhile to figure out is its problematic to block the domain. If you block the domain you blocks both the posts and the user comments. So its like blocking every user of the domain and many people globally are biligual with english being the most common second language. I really wish they could make a more nuanced block where you could choose users or posts.

Not really. No one really uses the language settings on their posts/comments so filtering by them is pretty useless. And if you filter “undefinied” you’ll filter most english content as well.
Best thing is to just block communities in languages you don’t want, there shouldn’t be that many.

Afaik it has never worked right. If you properly set your post to English, it would hide your post from everyone who didn’t have a language set (so everyone).
The way it should work is if you don’t have languages set in your profile it should show you all languages. If you do have a language set, it should show you those languages AND undefined.
Then you’d be free to specify the language of your post without hiding your post from 99.9% of users.

Yet. Eventually that will (hopefully) become a more significant issue, so it really should start to be addressed now to head that off.

I comment in English and German but I absolutely can’t be arsed to select the language from the drop-down every time. So short of some automatic language detection (which is also problematic), I don’t see how.
