Reporting user to instance admins?

As I understand it, user reports go to the community, the community’s instance, as well as the user’s instance if the user is from a separate instance.

My concern is if a user is breaking instance rules across multiple communities it might not rise to a level to catch the attention of instance admins. If my understanding (^) is correct I imagine there is an absolute flood of reports at the instance level making the correlation of reports against a particular user hard to single out.

Is my understanding wrong? Or maybe reports are automatically correlated? Or failing that is there a way to report a user directly to instance admins?

The reporting system on Lemmy is pretty opaque and given that many rule violators, disinformation spreaders and generally toxic posters are community mods just makes reports sometimes worse than useless.

If you are making reports and don’t think they’re reaching the admin, which IIRC can happen if the community mods solve the report first, you can always just DM the admins with your case and evidence.

This is definitely true on lemmy.world. As I type this there are 241 open reports in the queue, which is actually low compared to recent weeks. Sifting through them to find the ones that need attention from the admin team is a time-consuming chore. It would be really nice if Lemmy’s report system let users flag reports that they think deserve admin attention.

As Saleh mentioned, the workaround for now is to contact the admin team at the applicable instance. For lemmy.world you can use the reporting mechanisms listed in this community’s sidebar:

The instances usually provide a contact to reach out to the admins directly in the sidebar. You always have the server sidebar below the community sidebar.

For lemmy world it is a bit confusing because they link to their rules explanation first. This community !support@lemmy.world has some infos in the sidebar

A mod can correct me if im wrong, but my understanding is that, yes, it goes to all of those people

Ive reported a comment before for breaking a community rule, only to have the user banned on my own instance but not in the community or community instance. Which means they can continue interacting with my comments but I can’t see it or respond to it.

Intuitively, it makes sense that if a user is breaking a rule, it should potentially run all the way up the chain - but sometimes the community rule is far stricter and sometimes the instance rule is. Imo they should make this a little cleaner
