There is also currently a demo available on Steam for the game for anyone interested in trying it.

That’s interesting.
Assuming they’re hosting the project on GitHub, I did a search but the only repo I found that seems relevant is the backend SpacetimeDB mentioned in the article: github.com/clockworklabs/SpacetimeDB.
Do they really intend to open the source of the entire game? Or just the backend?

I remember seeing an article about it a month back. It’s just the backend that they’re open sourcing, since that will let it be audited for bugs, help the community make mods for private servers, and help other studios in the future since the backend is the hard part about making MMO’s. The devs are wanting to maintain ownership of assets like art and writing so those will not be oprn source

The backend is already open source (SpacetimeDB) but they announced that they will also be open sourcing the game code as well. But yes, the art assets will not be open but that's pretty standard for a lot of commercial games that later get open sourced (the open sourced id software projects for example).

They haven't open sourced the game itself yet. They made the announcement back in April on their own site.

IIRC only code, not asset files.

Ofc, assets should be copyrighted.
