Agree, wine started but without support from steam ti make proton creating game specific fixes and getting some anticheats to work on linux it would have taken quite a bit longer time to get to this point without steam creating proton.

Valve also contribute heavily upstream into the Wine project, but there are some fixes which “couldn’t” be upstreamed until v10. As well, the most recent Linux kernel has added some changes which specifically help with Wine and gaming.

This means they pulled in Wine 10 which is the thing that will actually have interesting changes. Proton updates are mostly just game specific bla bla. The real game changing (hah) things come from the libraries it depends on.
