Because he’s a fraud. He lies, and gets caught, and his reputation reflects that… among people who care.
Hyperloop was a scam to kill train development.
He’s pretending he’s got robots, by paying guys to wear onesies and mix drinks badly. Most recently: at an event for how he’s totally gonna do full self-driving next year. Just like last year. And every year before that.
Tesla stock gets manipulated to hell, and the board doesn’t mind, because the board is loyal to him instead of the company. Manufacturing seemed largely unaffected by all his bullshit (despite some apparent hamfisted micromanagement) until he pushed his rolling punchline of a truck. A sheet-metal pavement princess with the bed space of a 2003 Civic.
He also bought a major communications tool and unbanned all the Nazis. But everyone who trusted his word about satire got the boot. Moderators? Fired. Support? Fired. Public relations? Automatic poop emoji.
Widespread anger toward him is his fault. He’s not being misrepresented or discriminated against. He’s the richest asshole on Earth, he has the loudest megaphone ever invented, and he owns… a space program… as a side gig. ‘People sure are mad about this egotistical charlatan’s omnipresent bullshit!’ is not some kind of gotcha. When someone like that actively makes the world worse through their words and actions - what else would be a sane response?

Losing their minds?
Recognizing that a douchebag is a douchebag doesn’t necessitate losing your mind… You just write him off like the many other douchebags.
