Peacock finished the second quarter of 2023 with 24 million subscribers.
Somewhere at NBC there was an analyst who told the execs that this was a terrible idea that was going to lose a ton of money and the execs ignored that person and did it anyway.
Well of course. Individuals in an organization are compensated based on “impact”. It doesn’t matter (at least for the first few years) whether the impact is positive or negative!
There’s nothing to watch on Peacock. There’s only so many times I can rewatch old episodes of House or Parks & Rec.
Also, their NBC-themed branding is useless outside the United States so they can’t reach international markets effectively. They should do what Viacom CBS did with Paramount Plus and anchor their streaming platform to the internationally much more recognized Universal brand instead.
Resident Alien and Poker Face were both good. Not sure if Resident Alien is exclusive to Peacock. I don’t have it year-round, but I do appreciate their collection of new movies that didn’t do as well at the box office.

I don’t understand who is even subscribing to all of these network specific streaming services. Like, yeah I enjoyed watching the office when it was part of the 8.99 / month subscription fee I paid for Netflix, but I’m not subscribing to something completely new just for one or two shows 🤷♂️
What’s happening is these subs are coming in from other bundled services.
Spotify student comes with Showtime.
T-Mobile comes with Netflix.
Comcast gets you Peacock.
Several credit cards pay for “streaming services” as a statement credit, etc.
For now, as long as they’re “free” the value proposition is fine. It’ll fall apart when we have to pay for them for “real”.
(“Air quotes” because we all know it’s not really free.)
I don’t subscribe to Peacock, but it’s probably the best second-screen service out there. It has a solid lineup of some of the most re-bingable shows ever made. I’m always down for another lap of the office or parks and rec while I play a game or read my phone.
I got a year of Peacock ad tier for $20. Seemed like a good deal. I wanted to watch Pokerface and Twisted Metal. The Winter Olympics are also this year.
I got peacock for free as part of my Internet service with Comcast. But it looks like they decided to no longer offer it for free as of last month or so. Guessing they think I’ll resubscribe to it. Nah.
It’s the sports for me. I’m a big supercross/motocross fan and they’re on Peacock. Races are sat afternoon/evening but I typically just watch it on Sunday. The year before it went to Peacock I watched on YouTube and it was a huge pita to find anything decent and avoid spoilers. Pair that with the Premier League, Indy and sports car racing, and I’m fine with $50/year. I find Peacock to be a much better value than everything except Max.
They aren’t subscribing to them all.
The problem is that cable and broadcast revenue has started shrinking as more people cut the cord. So you have streaming as the future of television, but no one really knows what that looks like outside of Netflix and people who got fired from HBO Max.
Here’s hoping all the other studio specific streaming services follow suit. These things are just cancerous.
Good, I hope it dies and never releases in the UK. Netflix is still good here and has all the old 6+ season shows.

Got to hand it to Sony for not falling for the create your own streaming app trap. Everyone else tried to battle Netflix and they are all losing even Disney. I think there will be at least 3 dead apps by the end of next year. MGM+ being an obvious one. I can see Disney+/Hulu, Max, Netflix, and maybe one other one coming out of this alive.

I think Apple TV+ will also survive, simple because Apple’s business model permits loss leader services like that (or Apple Music is or Apple Fitness). The whole thing is basically one big elaborate iPhone ad.
