YouTube Shorts has different content than the rest, which are basically annoying kids dancing in front of their camera.

And classic YT videos with 70% of the content cropped out for no other reason than lazy creators wanting to capitalize on the scrollers.

The main difference is the quality of the algorithm serving up the videos. YouTube Shorts is the worst, most piss-poor shit I’ve ever seen. Like, it’s “someone should probably be fired” bad.

I don’t even use YouTube, really. I have no login, only go there following a link, occasionally.

The shit that shows up in that shitty “shorts” section is just garbage. Skimpily clad girls, mostly. Just crap.

I don’t know why, but my Shorts feed is nothing but weirdo right wingers, huge muscle dudes, and conspiracy videos – and I’m a middle aged liberal woman who mostly watches sewing tutorials on YouTube. And there’s absolutely nothing I can do to convince YouTube that these people can fuck off. It’s a nightmare.

I don’t have tiktok so I don’t know. I am pretty happy with my YouTube shorts feed. I feel like I have learned a lot from it, but I can’t remember what.

I don’t use Instagram or tiktok, but I’m a longtime consumer of YouTube educational content, and my shorts feed mostly matches. I suspect that the presence of extremely high quality educational video on youtube allows many creators to use shorts as a gateway into their longer form videos.

In short, I think they’re all only as good as you’ve trained the algorithm to make them. Without algorithmic training, I’m sure they’re the same.

    Just as a couple examples

Jdraper has some great shorts on London history

Magnify has some nice shorts on etymology

Etymology nerd has some good shorts on etymology

None of these creators are flawless, and you may not love their presentation style, but I discovered them all through shorts, and they have all taught me new things.
