I wonder if you can simply this by using a monochromatic IR (or UV) source instead of sodium vapor lamps and just filter out those light frequencies in software.

That’s pretty dope. I remember hearing about this old technique, and it’s awesome to see folks resurrect it. Masking out thin, transparent and blurry stuff is a HUGE pain in the ass.
