  Yep, it should always be a surprise attack. Your employer is NEVER your friend. You will always have competing interests.

  Their aim is to exploit you, your aim is to be well paid for doing very little (eg. The fabled “cushy job” scenario).

  There’s no room for a friendship, it’s adversarial. You’re cordial to get long until there’s a viable move to make.

  You can talk to your union though. Sometimes they can help find you employment at a related union shop or another shop within that union
