ladicius@lemmy.world 3 weeks agoYep. It could indeed become integrated as it already somehow is, at least over here in Germany: If you are in end of life care the doctors will help you with a lot of medication to painlessly die. In that stage nearly nobody suffers anymore.
Just change the guidelines a little bit, find medical staff who are sympathetic to the cause, and a lot of suffering will be no more.

Apparently it used to be more like that here in the past until a doctor called Harold Shipman helped loads of people die who didn’t actually want to die.
It made a lot people uneasy about doctors administering lethal doses of painkillers.

It was illegal for doctors to do it during Harold Shipman’s time. Just less monitored. But most doctors refused to even discuss the subject with patients.
No one should make the mistake the nation supported it then. Changes to the law have been discussed since at least the 80s, This is the closet we have ever come to legalisation.
