Do leitmotifs count as pre-existing? Cause if so I have words for them.
Comment on Hans Zimmer’s ‘Dune 2’ Score Fails to Meet Eligibilty Requirements for Oscars
fonji@sopuli.xyz 4 weeks ago
TL;DR:
The Academy’s rule states: “In cases such as sequels and franchises from any media, the score must not use more than 20% of pre-existing themes and music borrowed from previous scores in the franchise.” Since Zimmer’s composition for “Dune: Part Two” incorporates substantial elements from his work on 2021’s “Dune,” it falls outside of the eligibility criteria.

That seems fair, imo

This… sounds fair? I think? Don’t get me wrong both Dune scores are incredible but maybe it’ll be good to recognize someone other than Hanz Zimmer just this year.

Fair? What’s fair about how they hand out Oscars? Seriously. One example, I thought it has been pretty well established that awards are often handed out because of a person’s history of work and not only the current thing they are being awarded for this year. I’m sure this could be hotly debated, but I’ve never heard anyone accuse the Oscars of being fair.
