FireTower@lemmy.world 1 year agoMy understanding is that female refers to the gender while woman refers specifically to an adult of the aforementioned gender. As in you wouldn’t call a 3 year girl a woman and you wouldn’t call a 90 year old woman a girl, as girl carries a diminutive connotation compared to the more apt term woman.

If you ask someone to babysit your little female, you’re probably gonna get weird looks, I don’t think female works as a way to reference children.
Female may work as an encompassing term for girl and woman, but it’s rarely practical to refer to a particular member of that combined group except for technical works like research or maybe police reports.
