But comments and posts would still be ranked by upvotes and downvotes wouldn’t they? Or does this instance only rank by upvote?

  Any timeline viewed via an instance that has disabled downvotes doesn’t factor downvotes in when calculating position rank. They just get ignored.
  
  I know people try to downvote things because they want to express that they don’t like the thing, but that doesn’t mean downvotes don’t have practical value.
  
  In my experience, that’s exactly what it means. Sure, they have practical value in theory, but in practice, they’re weaponised against trans folk, neuro divergent folk, and many others that wear their differences openly, and given that this is a trans focused instance, it’s just not worth dealing with the bigots downvotes
