  NATO = American airbases, tanks, nukes, etc. Its basically one giant military base for USA

  Ukraine and Finland have huge border w Russia if you look on a map. From their border its only a few hours drive on flat terrain to Moscow and St. Petersburg. Most of Russia's population is concentrated in this area, its the most valuable/vulnerable part of the country.

      He was a KGB officer during the Cold war, and witnessed the fall of Berlin wall as well as breakup of Soviet Union. He glued a broken Russia back in the 90s and seemed to be opening to the West.

      The US invasions in Iraq/Afg/Iraq2/Libya/Syria, disillusioned him to the 'spreading democracy' of the West, and he treats NATO like in the Cold war. He isn't entirely wrong to be suspicious.
