Deutschlandticket should have been a wake-up call for the desolate state of public transport.
For years and years DB complained that they cannot provide a more broadly available service because there is not enough public interest. Factual statements about the booking process for interstate travel and high fares for short travels were swept aside as hearsay.
Suddenly, public interest piqued because of the Deutschlandticket and it was a disaster with a capital D. Who got the blame? The company that failed to expand even tho they had a monopoly-by-law for over 60 years and that doesn’t pay for the infrastructure they are using to make profit? No, it was the customers of course.

“… in that regard.” I generally prefer our current government, but that does not morally prevent me from critizicing them and shitting on their bad behavior. Better != Good
