I use it but only for a close friend group and occasionally asking questions in bigger servers. It's way too much for a group chat but thats what makes it fun to use as well. I wish there was an appealing libre alternative that was worth switching to beyond the foss aspect but there really isn't at the moment. Hopefully matrix works out because it's looking pretty good so far.

I'm looking into Rocket Chat, it seems good. Matrix doesn't have native video chat functionality

I've never used calls in matrix, but my understanding was that they do exist, just aren't well supported by non-Element clients

Yes, the problem is, it's not native, it's via a plugin. The protocol used by the plugin is awesome but it means if you're using alt clients (like Fluffy Chat, which I direct all my IRL friends to since it's simple and sexy) you won't be able to participate in video chats
I think Rocket Chat is both FOSS and more feature-filled
