Some fediverse implementations use the Mastodon API but I don't think Misskey is one of them, so it certainly wouldn't work out of the box

Perhaps not but would Misskey be able to use the Pleroma API? The Pleroma API and Mastodon APIs are similar but not identical

It doesn't really matter what the API is, since it isn't the Misskey API
Using such a frontend with something else would entail porting all the functions to refer to another API
