SethTaylor@lemmy.world 11 hours agoWhere I grew up you could smoke in bars when I was in high-school. Not only was I allowed to go in but the place was also absolutely full of cigarette smoke. Many of those basement bars shut down completely after one caught fire a few years ago. It was a huge scandal

Bars? You little whippersnapper. There was a time when every table had an ashtray. Every table everywhere: restaurants, stores, the checkout line at the gas station, public transportation…
And I am not talking about smoking sections, that came later. I’m talking about people with lit cigarettes being as ubiquitous as people on cellphones today.

I’ll never forget the old lady i saw as a child walking the grocery store with a lit cigarette hanging on her lip. Completely socially acceptable behavior at the time.
