According to Skatteverket, a deceased must be cremated or buried within a month of death. If they get cremated, then the ashes need to be buried within a year. There can be exceptions, the page says
No idea if you can turn loved ones into gemstones here, Iād assume not. Iād also assume that if youāre waiting with burying the cremated remains of someone because theyāre to be laid to rest alongside a loved one, youāre also not allowed to keep said remains at home.

That makes sense, itās just blowing my American mind, where an urn on the mantle is extremely commonplace. My brother and I both an urn with our motherās remains, for instance.

Right? Iāve a friend in England who has a little urn with some of their motherās ashes. Iām personally planning on keeping my dogās ashes when he passes. However, apparently keeping a human is a no-no.
Sweden has this rep of being very liberal and free, but thereās a lot going on here thatās baffling. Weāve got some of the highest drug related deaths in Europe, and every single party in parliament is for the heavy criminalisation of drug use. Itās like the one thing theyāre all agreeing on. We even did some stop-and-frisk for a while!

I bet the ashes thing is an old law, probably based on religion. Iād imagine they just never saw a need to change it, and too few people cared about it to ask for it to be changed
