it was? huh. i used to brew my own root beer (like ten years ago, not in the 60s) and i probably still have a bag of sassafras bark laying around somewhere.

Kind of ruins it for me that sassafras was banned in the 1960s for its carcinogenic properties and now all root beer is made from artificial sassafras. I stick with ginger beer myself.

interestingly only the bark and its oil are banned. you can still buy the leaves as gumbo file since they don’t have the oil in them. they don’t taste like root beer though
