thanksforallthefish@literature.cafe 1 day agoYes, that’s one spin. Another is the new tyrant make seek to blame everything that is wrong with Russia on Putin - there’s plenty of historical support for that being a likely tactic (across many dictatorship changeovers).
In that event the war becomes another piece of evidence about Putin’s incompetence and how the great new leader is fixing everything by exiting it.
There’s a few ways this can go, but realistically given the massive impact it is having on the Russian economy and hence the next tyrant’s ability to siphon off assets I’m betting it goes towards stopping the war than doubling down on it

Russia has a particular centuries-long mindset where it is assumed the world is out to destroy Russia, and it may do so, but Russia is going to take as much of the world down with it as possible. It would be more acceptable then for a new leader to double down in Ukraine than to show weakness by suing for peace. One of the keys to Putin’s early popularity was his immediate and aggressive warfare against breakaway republics. A successor will face the same options.
