This is like bumping the speed limit up five mph. People are already speeding, now the "enforced" limit is just higher. Some truck drivers push things to try and get more loads in a week. Electronic logs makes this harder to hide, but they still do it. Which gets back to the reason for the rule, to reduce fatigue on the road. Be careful out there, since no one making sure the roads are safer.

Relaxing all these various regulations set up decades ago to reduce deaths will probably do the same. Look for more truck accidents, coming soon. I've seen enough of them weaving and drifting during late night trips before, but it's okay, give them a few more hours on the road.

Incrrasung the speed limit is likely to mean people just adjust the level of speeding to match.
If everyone is driving 45 in a 40, increasing it to 45 means they will go 50.

Except in a few exceptional circumstances this is surprisingly not the case. People drive at a speed they perceive as appropriate for the design of the road. Wider roads, wider lanes, straighter roads, open sightlines, and bigger shoulders will make people naturally settle on driving faster. This is why just blithely reducing speed limits with poxy signs on problem roads famously doesn’t accomplish anything. It’s also why people go bombing down the stroad in your local commercial district at 55+ MPH in complete contravention of all the signs everywhere that probably say something around 35. The damn thing looks like a highway to peoples’ monkey brains, so they treat it as such.
People certainly talk about how “my strategy for speeding is to take the speed limit and then you can go around 5/10/15/whatever over and the cops probably won’t care,” and if you sit there in the passenger seat and actively press them on it they may actually drive that way for as many as several consecutive minutes. But most of them just fall back to their perceptual “intuitive” speed for whatever road along with everyone else. Especially if they see everyone else passing them.

Increasing and decreasing speeds have different results. A speed tgat seems too slow is not treated the same as one that is too fast.
You are correct that reducing speeds under the speed people drive doesn’t tend to reduce speeds actually driven. Speed limits are not as effective as things thst encourage driving slower.
Increasing speed limits doesn’t mean people ignore the limit and go under the new limit. They do scale up, including those who tend to drive a certain amount over the limit.

UK national speed limit is a good example of this in some places. Narrow country lanes, yeah technically the speed limit is 60 but you will die if you tried it and it would be considered driving dangerously. So people don’t drive above the speed limit.
Some still drive dangerously fast, they would do so anywhere.

That's exactly what happens. And some of those who were "going too fast for the road" are now "legal". Which is what will happen with truckers. They won't be okay with the new 16 hour limit, they were probably pushing it past that already. They'll just see if it they can go a bit more. Meaning more risk for everyone so we can get more stuff consumed faster.

Recently heard someone at work moaning about getting their 3rd penalty for speeding and not being able to take a speed awareness course because of how many times they have done it now.
Guy said he usually drives almost 80 in a 70. Yeah that will do it. He might lose his license soon, but apparently the oldest one does expire soon.

Here, if you aren’t doing 80 in a 70, you are a road hazard. It varies from state to state, but here 10 over is considered completely sane, and the chance of being pulled over for it are slim outside of a school zone or the cop’s own neighborhood. I’ve had cops start tailgating me because I was only going 5 over.
