I will never understand why we go through the motions with these things

There is no obligation for you to “go through the motions”, others chose to do so for things like “fun”, and as a form of socialising. Rather than making a pointlessly sour comment, you could easily have ignored the post, likely making both your, and everyone elses, day better.
