maybe in the future when “stem cell” research becomes more useful. but currently there isnt a way to completely restore function like a normal knee. you can get knee replacement surgery in extreme cases.

Lots and lots of NIH grants were terminated, some of them abruptly, and a lot were steered into other more questionable avenues, but the overall spending by the NIH, including in new grants, is only down a bit.
There is at least some work being done that is still federally funded, specifically in this space of cartilage regeneration. The ARPA-H “NITRO” project is one I’ve been watching, and has been continuing even though it predates the second Trump term.

As the article you’ve linked explains, Trump keeps trying to reduce NIH spending, and failing, because even a Republican-controlled Congress won’t go along. This new agreement to shift funds from NIH to the military next year is probably going to fail, too, and now that it’s on the radar I would press Congress to prohibit that when they pass a budget or continuing resolution to fund NIH next year.

I’ve talked to a number of people (and have family) with both single and dual knee/hip replacements - some in their 40’s.
It’s shocking how effective it is, and how much function they have - pretty much back to normal in weeks. All of them were outpatient surgeries - where they’re expected to walk immediately after surgery (it’s part of their rehab to move the joint immediately).
I had no idea until very recently this is how it works today. I was stunned at the progress that’s been made.

Unfortunately this runs in my family and it’s past my turn. But there are enough family members affected to make it really stand out how important it is to walk immediately and follow through with PT. Those that do are more mobile than they had been for years. Those who don’t, never get their mobility back
