You imagine. You sound like someone who’s either A), never struggled with addiction; or B), is currently struggling with addiction and just hasn’t realized it yet.
“It’s won’t be that bad if I have self-control” is a lie that many addicts told themselves in the beginning. You hear people mention it all the time at recovery groups.
The problem is that tiny little “if” is pulling several times more than its own weight in that sentence.

You don’t have self-control when you start using them.
When you’ve seen an otherwise rational, smart adult ruin their entire family and steal from their own children in order to get a fix after “just trying it once”, you understand all the self control in the world won’t be enough.
