amio@lemmy.world 1 week agoTo a degree, yes, how do you build that list otherwise? Most “communities” are duds with no activity. And poor support for aggregating even identically named communities across instances means all of this is a real chore

I definitely agree with you there. Finding the communities is not easy.
I think when I first started I went through a 411 list and just started adding things that sounds interesting. Many of them still haven’t had any content since I joined, but if they ever do, I’ll catch it.
I also follow /new communities, and every now and then I’ll join a fresh one if it sounds fun. Again, they may not go anywhere, but I’ll know if they do.
Otherwise, I search for things when they randomly pop in my head, or if someone else on here mentions one in particular. Or if I’m bored, I’ll switch to all and see if anything catches my eye.
