It’s cheaper than fixing a real problem, and much easier to sell.

You can literally have TWO right-wing parties entirely in agreement with right-wing policies on those things which have the most impact in the lives of pretty much everybody out there whilst playacting politics with culture wars so that one of the claims to be “leftwing”.
If you’re American (and nowadays, also from most countries in Europe), this description probably sounds very familiar …
