The thing is the suits are forcing release dates that compromise the quality of the software being shipped. Day1 updates are almost mandatory. So unless they pivot to a strategy where they let the team, not the suits, decide when to release, guarantee extended patch support (e.g stop killing games), or offer discs as an eol option, the current model is untenable.

Not just Day 1 patches but continued post-launch support too. And DLCs. Back in the times before the internet a game would release and that was it. The disc was the whole game and all it would ever be. We’re not there anymore.
Also, discs degrade really fast anyway, it’s not an amazing long term storage medium. I’d rather the GOG model of offline DRM free installers you can store on your own, in terms of game preservation, than forcing production of discs.
