BakedGoods@sh.itjust.works 5 months agoPlugging some firmware hacked device from a company I know nothing about with a website from the 90s into my network doesn’t appeal to me. The computer drives have region locks too last time I checked (although you can change it a couple of times before you need to re-flash the firmware).
Still a shit ton of hassle for playing films I own.

Haha I don't blame you with the player, I bought one after saving for months and it works fine though.
The computer doesn't region lock, the software is probably what's doing it. Use MPC-HC to play your discs, or MakeMKV to rip the raw files.

I followed up, and indeed that's what's happening. FOSS programs just read the data and don't care about the region information

I don’t know if it’s still the case, but the region lock used to be built in to the drive’s firmware. You could change it once or twice, but once you hi the limit, you were stuck.
