chiliedogg@lemmy.world 1 week agoMy idea for preventing wars of choice is for there to be a designated loved one (child, spouse, grandkid, etc) the President has to personally kill with their own hands in order to order military action not pre-authorized by a 3/4 vote by Congress.

This was proposed during the Cold War. In 1981 Roger Fisher proposed having the nuclear codes in a capsule inside the chest cavity of a naval officer, whose job it was to carry a butcher knife to be killed with. If the president wanted to launch, he’d have to get the codes by killing this guy with his own hands
