What was was so great about web design in 2012? It was barely any different back then except for being much worse on phones. And the main reason for your complaints is the need to accommodate phones.

You’re right, but 2012 is when they started paying too much attention to mobile and it started to bleed into everything else.
The 90s was clearly better, UI-wise, so yes, I wish people would go back to that.
