This sent me down a bit of a rabbit hole! Apparently “layed” used to be a well-accepted form. “The hens layed 22 eggs each”, etc.

But it looks like it was tapering off in use during the 1700s. Laid was almost always more common even during the 1500s according to Google ngrams.
