You’re both right. He had good intentions, but good intentions implemented in bad ways can be - and often are - just as harmful as bad intentions. If you want to be beneficial for society, you can’t just hope for the best: you need to actively assess whether your actions are helping, and course correct if they aren’t. It’s a tiresome, often thankless job, but it’s required to do actual good.
