Other instances do this, he’s not the only one. There is a github program that you can use. Also, cloudflare (cloudfare?) probably does a bit of that too.

We all know it was underhanded to deploy a secret list
Please don’t be weird about it

Instances choosing to implement their own blocks for their instance is different than a front end developer sneaking a block list in an obscure way that impacts multiple instances.
pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago
No it’s not. If I have an instance that blocks any mention of lgbtq+, or trump, or biden, or whatever, that wouldn’t be cool at all. It would be fine if they told you up front, but not if it’s a secret.

You can’t see the difference between one instance making a decision for themselves and a dev making a secret decision that affects multiple instances?

Gotosocial and Jabber(XMPP) have blocklists too. Optional ones.
pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago
Optional is great. which means people are told that it’s there. The downvote brigade is here for a reason though. Red.dit flashbacks.

The brigade from who? Who’s bregading you?

Is this a hard comparison to ongoing controversy? I’m on a mobile but can come back on a desktop. Although yeah cloudflare, hmmm, never heard of it, but my neighbor is yelling at their dog

Yeah that’s my take on it. It was a very weird thing to do on many levels. Especially doing it with the secret API call. The guy didn’t understand the fediverse and wanted to mold it arbitrarily. Even if he had gone about it non-secretly it was very doomed to failure for a lot of reasons, but doing it secretly was making sure it would fail even harder. The whole idea of this platform is that you can block any number of instances/people/communities but trying to secretly do that on other people’s behalf was never going to end well.
Having said all that, there is quite a bit of toxicity here that goes unchecked. But his idiotic way of dealing with it was never the right move.
