Their profits are enormous, this is why. People are wiling to pay because they have these luxary stores, luxary brand. Then they can charge much more. Its like a luxary clock.

Just compared the storage price jump to the current iPad Pro.
512gb to 2tb Steam Machine + £270 (£90 per 512gb) 512gb to 2tb iPad Pro + £800 (£267 per 512gb)
That’s straight up robbery from Apple.

You mean like one of those cool GShocks or like a fancy full balls out on display Swatch?

The £800 to upgrade the iPad Pro isn’t just paying for storage. The 1TB and 2TB iPad Pro have an extra CPU core and 4GB more RAM vs the lower storage tiers.

Ok, fair enough. That accounts for the difference in upgrade pricing between an iPad and a Mac.
But what accounts for the other £110 between the same upgrade on a Steam Machine and a Mac?

Apple could use higher quality drives, or have to pay a premium for being weird and buying controller-less drives, but yes, a big part of the difference is probably just higher profit margins.
Apple raised prices on a bunch of stuff today, and the iPad Pro upgrade is now £900.

Oh, I know. It was true when I bought my first MacBook in ’07. It’s just rough to see it in such stark numbers like that.
Looking at the upgrading pricing on a Mac Studio - which is the closest analogue to the Steam Machine - the pricing is only slightly better at £200/500gb. Still criminal though.

Atleast Macbooks sometimes get discounted very early if the config or color (even silver?!) is not popular. That makes the 1TB model sometimes pretty good value for a brand new chip.
I like ARM and the efficiency of apple silicon but yeah the price increase for better RAM or SSD is very steep.
